can curd reduce acidity - #25540

Lily

I am really struggling with this awful acid reflux that pops up after certain meals… I mean, it’s suuuch a pain. I read somewhere that curd might help with acidity, and I’m curious if that’s true? My friend swears by it — she always eats curd after her meals, claims it calms her stomach down. I tried doing that too but wasn’t sure if it was just my imagination or if there’s really something to it. Last week, I had a really bad episode after a spicy dinner (never a good idea for me!), and it got me thinking — can curd really reduce acidity? The burning feeling was unreal, and I was chugging antacids like they were candy. Is there a specific type of curd I should be eating, or any particular way to combine it with food? I’m also worried about messing up my stomach even more. Hope you guys have some good tips!

Curd, or yogurt, can be a soothing remedy for acidity especially from an Ayurvedic viewpoint. It aids digestion and pacifies Pitta dosha, which is often aggravated in conditions like acid reflux. Since Pitta is the dosha associated with heat and acidity, ensuring its balance is crucial. However, not everyone with acid reflux finds relief with curd, and this can depend on individual constitution or prakriti. For most people, eating curd in moderation might help reduce acidity, as it has good bacteria that promote gut health and balance stomach acid. To maximize its benefits, it's best to have fresh, homemade curd rather than store-bought varieties, which often contain added preservatives and sugar that can interfere with digestion. If you’re preparing curd at home, use full-fat milk for better texture and probiotic content. Here's a practical way to integrate curd into your meals: during lunch, you can pair it with rice, as the combination acts as a probiotic and cooling meal, which calms the stomach fire. Ensure that you've curd at room temperature rather than straight from the fridge, as cold items can shock the digestive system. Make sure to consume it in moderate amounts to avoid excess dampness in the digestive tract. Avoid having curd at night as digestion is slower, and it could ferment in your stomach, causing more issues. Adding a pinch of rock salt, cumin, or coriander powder to curd might enhance digestion and reduce acidity. Complementing curd with simple lifestyle tweaks like eating your meals in a relaxed environment, minimizing spicy foods, and maintaining an upright posture after meals can provide further relief from acid reflux. If symptoms persist or worsen, it might be wise to consult a physician to ensure there's not a more serious underlying issue. Safety and efficacy are key, and balancing curd intake with a holistic approach will support your digestive health without aggravating your symptoms.
