I am wondering about eating curd at night because I’ve heard mixed things. Last week, I enjoyed a beautiful dinner with my friends, and we had this delicious meal that included curd, but then I started worrying. I felt a bit bloated after, was that because of the curd? A friend mentioned she never has curd at night because it could cause indigestion and nightmares, but I thought it was just a myth. Still, I can't shake off the thought that can we take curd at night without it ruining my sleep? I love curd for its taste and probiotic benefits, but if it disrupts my digestion or sleep what’s the point? I've been trying to read about it online but can’t find a clear answer! Anyone else wonder about this or have experiences like this with curd at night? Does timing really matter?? Help!

Eating curd at night can be a bit of a tricky topic, actually. In Ayurveda, it’s typically suggested to avoid consuming curd during nighttime. While curd is rich in probiotics and can be great for digestion, when eaten at night, it may not suit everyone, especially if you’ve experienced bloating. The reasoning behind this is largely due to the fact that, according to Ayurveda, curd can generate heat in the body and can be difficult to digest during the cooler and more passive nighttime.

Our digestive fire, or agni, tends to slow down at night. So, introducing heavier foods like curd could potentially cause indigestion because your body may not break it down as efficiently. This might be why you felt bloated after consuming it with your friends. The probiotic benefits and cooling nature of curd, when had during the day’s more active periods, can actually be very balancing, especially if you’ve got a strong agni.

Also, curd — especially in excess — is considered kapha-enhancing. It could contribute to excess mucous production, and for certain people, this might lead to a sense of heaviness or even bad dreams, as your friend suggested. But this can vary from person to person, really. If you love the taste and benefits of curd, consider having it during lunch instead, when your digestive fire is strongest.

Timing is quite important in Ayurveda. If you enjoy curd, practice eating it during daytime meals, perhaps blended with a sprinkle of black pepper or a spoonful of honey, which can aid digestion. If your lifestyle or constitution causes you to be kapha-dominant or you have digestive issues during nighttime, it might be especially beneficial to avoid it at night. But definitely listen to your own body — if it doesn’t sit right, it’s best to steer clear at night.
