how to overcome constipation during pregnancy - #25870

Abigail

I am 5 months pregnant and totally struggling with constipation. It’s like this terrible thing happened where I’ve gone days without a proper bathroom visit, and I thought pregnancy would just be all about cravings and glow, but no! I’ve tried more fiber, heaps of water, and even some prunes – ugh, those things! But still, I just feel bloated all the time and sometimes it hurts a little! There are moments when I just sit there, hoping something might happen, but it doesn’t. I heard Ayurveda could help with this, but I have no clue how to use it for constipation during pregnancy. Can someone please share how to overcome constipation during pregnancy using Ayurvedic techniques? Are there certain herbs or diets I should be looking into? I really want to feel better and not dread every meal anymore. I’m just feeling kinda helpless with this whole situation – would love to hear any advice!!!

Dealing with constipation during pregnancy can indeed be challenging. From an Ayurvedic perspective, constipation can often be linked to Vata dosha imbalance, especially as the natural tendency of Vata is to become aggravated during pregnancy. It's important to address this with gentle remedies since you're expecting. First, dietary habits play a crucial role. Incorporate warm, cooked foods into your diet which are easier to digest. A simple meal of rice with ghee (clarified butter) can aid in smooth digestion; ghee is especially balancing for Vata. Cooking with cumin, coriander, and fennel can also help stimulate agni, or digestive fire. Aim to eat at regular times and avoid cold and raw foods which increase Vata. Hydration is key, but consider drinking warm water or herbal teas instead of plain cold water. Trifala, a traditional Ayurvedic formulation, can be very effective in relieving constipation. Taking one teaspoon of Trifala powder with warm water before bedtime can help regularize bowel movements, but given your condition, consult your physician before starting this. Incorporate light exercises, such as gentle yoga or walking, into your daily routine to aid in bowel movement and overall digestion. Simple poses like Baddha Konasana (Bound Angle Pose) can improve circulation and stimulate digestion. Herbs like dried ginger and fennel can be made into a tea, which can be consumed post meals to aid digestion. Avoid overexerting or engaging in strenuous activities which might imbalance Vata further. Maintaining a warm, soothing environment can help, too. A sesame oil massage before a bath can help soothe the nervous system, enhancing digestion by calming Vata. If the condition persists, it's important not to delay consulting your healthcare provider. Constipation can sometimes be a sign of underlying issues, and safety is always paramount. Balancing care with Ayurveda and modern medicine ensures your well-being and that of your baby.
