Hi! I’m an assistant to the Ask Ayurveda doctors. I’ve carefully reviewed your question.
I will explain your symptoms through the Ayurvedic perspective so you understand what is happening in your body as a whole.
In Ayurveda, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is often associated with an imbalance in Vata dosha, which governs movement and can manifest as pain, dryness, and stiffness. The severe pain in your elbow and shoulder neck area suggests an aggravated Vata condition, possibly accompanied by Pitta dosha if inflammation or heat is present. Castor oil is known for its Vata-pacifying properties due to its oily and heavy nature, which can help counteract dryness and stiffness. Dry ginger powder is warming and can help stimulate circulation and digestion, potentially reducing Ama (toxins) that might accumulate due to weak digestion.
The whole-body connection here involves Vata’s role in joint health and mobility, while Pitta may contribute to inflammation. Digestive health is crucial as it affects the accumulation of Ama, which can exacerbate joint problems.
To give doctors a precise and effective treatment plan, your answers to the questions below are essential. Without this information, the recommendations will be more general and less accurate.
Please answer each question as clearly as possible.

(Mild, Moderate, Severe, Very severe) 3. Do you experience any swelling, redness, or stiffness in the painful areas? If so, when is it most noticeable? 4. About Castor Oil Use In Ayurveda, castor oil is very helpful for Vata imbalance and joint pain, but in RA we must use it carefully and in the right dose. Internal use Dose: 1–2 teaspoons at bedtime With: Warm water or warm milk Frequency: 2–3 times per week (not daily long-term) Duration: Use for 2–3 weeks, then take a break ✔ Helps reduce stiffness, clears ama (toxins), improves bowel movement ⚠️ Avoid daily long-term use → can weaken digestion (you already have indigestion) 👉 External use Warm castor oil + gentle massage on: Neck Shoulders Elbow joints Follow with hot fomentation (heat) ✔ This is safer and very effective for pain + stiffness ✔ Can be done daily Since you’re already on prescription medicines for RA, please: Keep a gap of 1–2 hours between these remedies and your medicines Do not stop your current treatment
