Can I take Agasthya Rasanayam again after a year for mucus formation? - #55196
I am 64 years old, male. I was impacted by Covid-19 and was prescribed Agasthya Rasanayam by an Ayurveda doctor. I took it for a year, up to middle of 2025. Can I take it now without being prescribed? I am prone to mucus formation.
Doctors' responses
At age 64, if you are prone to excess mucus, cough, breathlessness, recurrent cold or post-Covid chest congestion, Agastya Rasayanam can be taken again in small supervised doses if you do not have uncontrolled diabetes, severe indigestion, acute fever, or liver disorder Agastya Rasayanam – 1 teaspoon (about 5 g) twice daily after food with warm water or warm milk for 6–8 weeks. If mucus is thick: Add Sitopaladi Churna 2 g + honey twice daily after meals. For Kapha reduction: Drink warm water boiled with small piece of dry ginger and tulsi leaves 2–3 times daily. Avoid: Cold food, curd at night, refrigerated items, banana at night, excess sweets.
Thanks for your reply. I do not have any respiratory problem nor recurrent cough. I practice Yoga. So, the mucus formation is very low. My throat is sensitive to cold food. I never drink cold water/drink etc. Sometimes I eat refrigerated food after thawing it. Sometimes the food may not be thawed completely
Yes, Agasthya Rasayanam is traditionally used in Ayurveda for chronic mucus formation, weak lungs, recurrent cough, post-Covid respiratory weakness, and Kapha imbalance. Since you benefited earlier, it may help again — but at 64 years of age, it is better to restart it cautiously and ideally under guidance, especially if you have diabetes, hypertension, digestion issues, or are taking regular medicines. Usually, Agasthya Rasayanam is taken: 1–2 teaspoons twice daily Preferably after food with warm water or milk For 6–12 weeks initially, then reassess Along with medicine, Ayurveda advises reducing Kapha-increasing foods: Avoid cold foods, curd at night, excess sweets, banana, refrigerated items, and heavy dairy Take warm water regularly Use light spices like dry ginger, black pepper, and turmeric in food Helpful supportive measures: Steam inhalation with ajwain or eucalyptus occasionally Gentle breathing practices like Anulom-Vilom and Bhramari Early dinner and proper sleep

Your mucus formation is likely due to throat sensitivity to cold or partially thawed refrigerated food. Avoid such foods, prefer warm freshly cooked meals, and continue Yoga regularly. Warm water with a little dry ginger may help keep the throat clear.
