does punarnava increase blood pressure - #40292

I am really confused about something. I’ve been dealing with some persistent fatigue and mild swelling in my legs, and my doc suggested trying punarnava, saying it’s great for kidney health and can help with water retention. The thing is, I usually have low blood pressure, like really on the lower end, and I've heard mixed things about punarnava. Does punarnava increase blood pressure? I keep reading that it can be good for revitalization, but I worry, like if it might actually mess with my already low pressure. Last week, I gave it a shot and took the powder in warm water for a few days but started feeling kinda jittery. I mean, maybe it's my imagination? Or could it be some interaction with the other herbs I’m on? Feeling a bit of swirl in my stomach too, and now I am second-guessing if it’s worth continuing. I just want to know, is there something about punarnava that might actually boost blood pressure or is it all about kidney support?? Really don’t wanna make things worse! Any advice would be super helpful!

Punarnava (Boerhavia diffusa) is often appreciated in Ayurveda for its diuretic properties and benefits on renal health, which indeed makes it beneficial for managing conditions related to water retention and kidney function. It’s not typically known to increase blood pressure; rather, it aids in lowering high blood pressure due to its ability to reduce fluid overload in the body. But since you have low blood pressure, understandably, there could be concerns about how it interfaces with your physiology.

That jittery feeling and stomach upset might actually come from the herb itself or its interaction with other herbs you’re taking. Ayurvedic texts describe Punarnava as “Tridoshic,” meaning it can balance all three doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. But it primarily alleviates Kapha and Pitta, and in certain individuals, especially with a Vata dominant constitution or imbalance, it might cause symptoms like nervousness or slight digestive disturbances.

It’s crucial to consider all herbs and medications you’re on, as interactions could amplify these effects, so reflect on current regimen.

If you’re taking Punarnava with warm water, and find it doesn’t suit you, perhaps continue taking it with some cooling agents like honey or fresh aloe vera juice, both known for calming Vata. Also, start with a smaller dose, and monitor how you feel—50mg gradually increased as your body adjusts, up to 250-500mg/day in divided doses, but not beyond without custom guidance. If you’re experiencing persistent discomfort or those symptoms worsen, trust your instinct and pause the use, consult with your practitioner immediately.

Remember, Ayurveda tailors to everyone individually - so, reassess with a focus on your unique balance. If your BP is still on the lower side and challenging daily function, addressing that priority may involve more customized attention to diet, routine, and perhaps an alternative, supportive herb.

Punarnava, known scientifically as Boerhavia diffusa, doesn’t inherently increase blood pressure. In fact, it is traditionally used in Ayurveda for its diuretic properties, supporting kidney health and aiding in reducing water retention, which can sometimes help alleviate pressure-related symptoms by reducing fluid volume in the body. This aligns with your doctor’s suggestion. That said, let’s breakdown why you might be feeling jittery and a swirl in your stomach.

Your experience could have several explanations. First, punarnava’s effect on diuresis might cause fluctuations in electrolyte balance if you’re consuming it excessively, especially if you have naturally low blood pressure. Such imbalances could potentially cause feelings of jitteriness or dizziness. Secondly, if you are already on other herbal remedies, there might be an interaction causing unforeseen effects. The combination may be triggering changes in your system’s response.

Since you mentioned having low blood pressure, I’d advise moderating the dosage. Start with small amounts and see how your body responds. It’s crucial to monitor your daily intake to ensure it’s not disrupting your body’s natural balance. If you’re still feeling unsure, consulting directly with an Ayurvedic practitioner for a personalized approach could really help. They can tailor recommendations considering your prakriti, or inherent nature, and any other herbs you’re taking.

Additionally, pay attention to your agni, or digestive fire. If you’re feeling stomach discomfort, it might signa that your digestive system is reacting to the new introduction of herbs. Maintain a light and easily digestible diet to ensure your digestion is not overburdened. Perhaps taking punarnava with a pinch of black pepper could aid better assimilation.

Should these symptoms persist or become more severe, you might want to pause punarnava and discuss these reactions with a healthcare professional to rule out any serious electrolyte disturbances or interactions. Safety should always be the priority.
