how to take honey - #41067

John

I am dealing with some health issues and started reading up on natural remedies, and honey keeps coming up as a superfood. I've been hearing about it everywhere lately, like my friend swears it helped her allergies, and then I saw a post that said honey can boost immunity? Anyway, I thought I’d give it a shot, but I’m just confused on how to take honey. Like, should it be raw or can I just use the regular store stuff I have at home? I tried mixing it in warm water, but I’m not sure if that’s the best way? And how much is too much? Last week, I put like 3 tablespoons in my tea because I thought more would help, but now I’m worried that was too much sugar. Also, I came across a recipe for honey and lemon, which sounded really good but can I take that every day? I'm worried about if it’ll do anything for my throat or if it’s just a myth. Like how to take honey effectively? Should I be adding it to my smoothies too or just sticking to warm drinks? Any guidance would be super helpful!

When considering honey’s role in wellness, it’s essential in to make sure you’re using it correctly to truly gain its Ayurvedic benefits. Raw, unprocessed honey holds the best nutritional value and maintains its medicinal properties, so more beneficial compared to the regular store-bought variety which may be pasteurized and thus stripped of some of its nutrients.

While honey mixed with warm water is common practice, ensuring the water is not too hot is crucial since high temperatures can neutralize its healing properties. Ideally, water should be lukewarm, about body temperature or slightly above, to sustain the enzymes in honey.

As for the amount, a moderate quantity is key; around 1 to 2 teaspoons per day should suffice. Over-consumption, like the 3 tablespoons you mentioned, can lead to excessive sugar intake, which isn’t recommended for those mindful about sugar levels. Remember, balance is important.

The honey and lemon mix is indeed a potent remedy, primarily useful for soothing throat irritation and potentially aiding digestion. You can incorporate it into your morning routine, but be prudent with the lemon—it has a acidic nature, so it might not be suitable for everyone, especially those with sensitive stomachs or acidity issues.

Adding honey to smoothies is a fine approach, especially if you’re aiming to enhance the taste while still receiving its benefits. However, avoid heating honey directly if you plan to incorporate it into warm drinks like tea—add it once it’s cooled down slightly. Monitor your body’s reactions and adjust intake as necessary.

Finally, note that while honey is a superfood with impressive qualities, it’s not a substitute for a balanced diet or medical treatment. If you have health concerns, especially those like allergies or immunity questions, considering a consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner may offer more targeted advice towards your specific needs and dosha imbalances.

When incorporating honey into your daily routine for its health benefits, it’s essential to approach its use with awareness. Firstly, aim for raw, organic honey, as it’s less processed and retains more of its beneficial properties, compared to the regular store-bought versions which often lose potency due to pasteurization or added sugar content.

You mentioned mixing it with warm water, which is actually a beneficial way to take honey. Honey and lukewarm water can help in aiding digestion and detoxifying your system. Aim for no more than 1 to 2 teaspoons a day in such mixtures. Remember, even though honey is a superfood, it is high in natural sugars and excessive consumption can act quite similar to other sugars in the body, possibly spiking glucose levels.

Regarding honey and lemon in warm water, this combination is generally beneficial if taken in moderation. A daily morning routine of one teaspoon of honey and half a lemon in a cup of warm water can aid digestion and may also support the immune system. It should be safe for regular use unless you experience any gastric discomfort or adverse reactions. As for the myth — yes, it can soothe throat discomfort due to its mild antibacterial properties, but don’t expect it to be a cure-all.

Using it in smoothies is also fine — just be cautious about the quantity. Too much of honey could counteract with the health benefits due to the high sugar content. For a typical smoothie, a teaspoon should suffice.

In Ayurveda, honey is revered as a ‘Yogavahi,’ meaning a carrier of the healing property of the herbs it is combined with. This indicates honey’s role in enhancing the benefit of other ingredients — just be mindful of its Dosha-alteration properties; it’s great for pacifying Vata but should be limited for those with a Pitta imbalance.

Always remember the best way to use any natural remedy is moderation and understanding its proper place within your broader health regimen. If any serious condition arises, seeking direct consultation with a health professional is prudent.
