To address a stubborn cough and strengthen your respiratory system, Ayurveda would first advise looking at the balance of the doshas, particularly Kapha, which when aggravated can cause a build-up of mucus in the chest.

First, consider using an herbal remedy like Tulsi (Holy Basil). Tulsi is well-regarded in Ayurveda for its ability to support lung health. You can prepare a simple Tulsi tea by boiling a handful of fresh or dried leaves in water and sipping it a few times a day. Make sure the tea is warm but not too hot, as excessively hot substances may irritate your throat and chest.

Additionally, Pippali (Long pepper) could be beneficial. It is known to help clear mucus and enhance lung function. You can take Pippali in powder form, about half a teaspoon mixed with a teaspoon of honey once or twice a day after meals.

It’s also important to address your diet and lifestyle. Since Kapha tends to increase with heavy, sweet, and cold foods, try to incorporate more warm, light, and spicy foods. Ginger, black pepper, and turmeric are great spices to incorporate into your meals. Ginger tea is another excellent choice for supporting lung health.

Practicing Pranayama, particularly Bhastrika (Bellows Breath), can enhance your lung capacity and support respiratory health. Aim for 5-10 minutes of Pranayama daily, but start slow and increase as you feel comfortable.

Remember to keep warm, as cold can aggravate the symptoms. Avoid dairy and excessive sugar as these can thicken mucus and worsen congestion. Stay hydrated by drinking warm water throughout the day, which may help thin mucus and ease the coughing.

If your cough persists or worsens, it’s crucial to consult a healthcare professional. Persistent cough could be a sign of an underlying condition that requires more immediate attention. This advice is to guide you and should complement a professional evaluation where necessary.
