You know, Ayurveda indeed has a lot to say about food combinations and it’s true that mixing apples with milk isn’t really favored. The two have different energies (or gunas) and when consumed together, they can be hard on digestion. Apples are sour, and milk, sweet and heavy, so this pair can confuse your agni (digestive fire), which might be causing that bloating you mentioned.
Ayurveda advises against combining sour fruits with milk because they’re thought to curdle in the stomach, creating a kind of incompatible food combo known as “viruddha ahara.” This can disrupt the balance of your doshas (vata, pitta and kapha), leading to indigestion or other issues over time. So, yes, it’s possible that having this combo regularly could be contributing to your digestive problems.
If you’re used to this combination and it hasn’t caused significant discomfort, it might be okay to consume them at different times. You could have the apple as a mid-morning snack, saving the milk for another part of your day. Always aim for two hours gap between these, just to be safe.
When it comes to other fruits or dairy, Ayurveda suggests generally avoiding mixing milk with sour, astringent, and citrusy fruits like strawberries or oranges, because these can lead to similar issues. As for milk, best consumed on its own or with spices like cardamom or cinnamon that can enhance digestion, at room temperature or warm, to keep it lighter on your stomach.
There are other combos to be watchful of in Ayurveda, like mixing dairy with fish or melons with just about any other food. The key is to listen to your body. Try these changes and see how you feel, a little tweaking might clear up that bloating.
Embracing Ayurveda means being open to experimenting with these principles and seeing how they work for you. Not every rule applies the same way to every person, our bodies and lifestyle are unique, so don’t stress too much!
