In managing hypoglycemia, particularly for an elderly patient like this, it’s critical to balance their lifestyle and medication with special attention. Considering the recent experience of severe hypoglycemia, here are some personalized suggestions based on Ayurvedic principles and practical modern advice.
First and foremost, emergency situations like a blood sugar level dropping to 35 mg/dL must be handled swiftly with immediate medical care. For long-term management, ensuring stable sugar levels will be key. Since the patient is on insulin, close monitoring by your healthcare provider to adjust doses as necessary is important.
Diet- Make sure meals are well-balanced with complex carbohydrates, proteins and healthy fats. Instead of three large meals, aim for 5-6 smaller meals throughout the day to maintain stable sugar levels. Favor whole grains like barley and oats, which Ayurveda regards as stabilizing for blood sugar. Include easily digestible proteins such as mung beans and cottage cheese. Avoid empty carbohydrates and sugars – instead choose natural sweetness from fruits like pomegranates and apples.
Herbs like Vijaysar wood (Indian Kino) in water can aid in stabilizing blood sugar, but always consult a physician before adding new elements into the regimen. Fenugreek seeds soaked overnight and consumed in the morning upon empty stomach can also be beneficial.
For exercise, gentle walking for about 15-20 minutes daily is safe and supports metabolism without causing strain. Avoid heavy workouts which might cause blood glucose levels to drop too fast.
Stay hydrated by sipping on warm water, which supports digestion (agni) and helps maintain equilibrium in the body. Monitor stress with practices like simple Pranayama - deep breathing - which calms the mind and balances fluctuating energies, an essential part of managing diabetes as per Ayurveda.
Given her recent surgeries and medication, all changes in her routine must be monitored carefully. Keeping a daily log of her meals, activities, and blood sugar readings could help identify any patterns or triggers for her low sugar episodes. It’s essential to create a holistic, supportive environment that encourages stability and balance. Always consult with a healthcare provider before making significant changes to her management plan.
