Sleep apnea, especially at 62, can have varying causes, and it’s crucial to address this holistically through Ayurvedic principles. We often relate apnea with Vata and Kapha imbalances. The first step is harmonizing these doshas by modifying lifestyle and integrating dietary changes aimed at reducing kapha and stabilizing vata.

Diet plays a vital role. A warm, light diet that’s easy to digest is recommended. Think of soups, stews, and cooked vegetables like squash, carrots, and asparagus. Avoid heavy, cold, or mucous-forming foods like dairy (especially yogurt and cheese at night), cold beverages, and fried foods. Incorporating spices like ginger, turmeric, cinnamon, and black pepper can help stimulate agni and clear blockages in the respiratory channels.

Before bed, drink a cup of warm milk with a pinch of nutmeg and a small amount of honey. This can relax the mind and help with better sleep. Be sure to consume it at least a hour before lying down. Maintain regular sleep routines, aiming for bedtime around 10 PM. Consider a reclined sleeping position, raising the head slightly to aid breathing.

Pranayama and yoga are powerful. Practice Anulom Vilom and Bhramari Pranayama daily, as they calm the mind and support respiratory function. Include yoga asanas like Balasana (Child’s Pose), Vajrasana, and Bhujangasana (Cobra Pose), to open up chest and enhance respiratory capacity.

Nasya (nasal administration of herbal oils) can offer relief. Seek guidance from a qualified ayurvedic practioner for the use of oils like Anu Taila, as it requires expert handling.

Finally, if symptoms persist or seem severe, consult a healthcare professional urgently. It’s mortant to rule out any serious underlying conditions, ensuring a safe and integrated approach.
