The shift you’ve made by quitting alcohol is significant for your health, and many people find that their sleep patterns can be affected long after quitting. In Ayurveda, sleep disturbances can be linked to an imbalance in Vata dosha, which governs movement and the nervous system. Your insomnia and nighttime alertness might be signs that Vata is aggravated.
To help restore balance, incorporate a few specific daily practices. Try establishing a consistent sleep routine by going to bed and waking up at the same time each day. This can help reset your internal clock. Before bed, consider applying warm sesame oil to the soles of your feet and your scalp, which can have a grounding effect on Vata and promote relaxation. Follow this with a warm bath to further aid relaxation.
Diet also plays a crucial role. Favor warm, cooked foods such as soups, stews, and whole grains like rice or quinoa, which are grounding and easy to digest. Including moderately spiced foods (think turmeric, cumin, ginger) might help settle the digestion, which is essential to Vata balance. Try to avoid stimulants such as caffeine and nicotine close to bedtime, as they could be disrupting your sleep.
Herbal preparations like Ashwagandha or Brahmi can be beneficial. Ashwagandha helps in reducing stress and restoring energy levels , while Brahmi is known to promote calmness and aid in sleep regulation. You might find tea made from soaked fennel seeds in hot water to be soothing before bed.
Inconsidering your current tendency to smoke, smoking cessation methods focusing on reducing the urge to smoke, such as meditation and pranayama (breathing exercises), could also aid in calming Vata while supporting your journey.
Finally, since you mentioned a history of high cholesterol, maintaining a balanced diet, physical activity, and considering panchakarma therapies, like Shirodhara, which involves pouring warm oil over the forehead, can all contribute to overall balance. Always consult an Ayurvedic practitioner before starting any herb or therapy to make sure they align well with your prakriti and existing health conditions.
