What are the effects of porn on the brain that I should know as a concerned parent? - #22442

Emily

I am really worried about my son, who is just 15. He spends hours watching porn, and I’ve been reading up on the effects of porn on the brain. It seems like it can't be good, right? I mean, I’ve noticed some changes in him lately, like he’s less engaging with friends and seems kinda withdrawn. He's all about that screen time. People say the effects of porn on the brain can lead to issues with relationships and even affect moods. I’ve talked to him about it, but he just brushes it off like it’s no big deal! I caught him looking at stuff online that seems way too mature for his age, and honestly, I’m scared of what this might do to his growing mind. It’s like, how do I even approach this topic without making him feel judged? Is there a way to help him understand the effects of porn on the brain? I think some of his friends are into it too, which just makes it harder to tackle. What should be my first step? I don’t want to be that overprotective parent, but at the same time, I feel like this could lead to serious problems down the road. Anyone been in a similar situation? What’s the best way to guide him through this? I just hope I can help him before it’s too late!

The concerns you are expressing are valid, especially in today’s digital age where access to explicit content is becoming increasingly easy. Research has indicated that extensive exposure to porn, especially at a young age, can affects the brain's reward mechanisms. This might lead to changes in how your son perceives intimacy and relationships, potentially making him more withdrawn or affecting his ability to form real-world connections. In Ayurveda, balance in all aspects of life is vital. Recognizing that we are born with a unique constitution or prakriti, disruptions to our mental and emotional states can disturb this balance. For your son, excess screen time, particularly with content like porn, could be promoting a Vata imbalance, characterized by detachment and an overactive mind, which could explain symptoms of withdrawal or mood changes. First step here could be encouraging dialogue with him, but without judgment – making him realize you're there to support and understand. Discussing openly without making him feel attacked can lessen his defensive stance. Consider incorporating some Ayurvedic practices that might help him regain balance: Encourage regular routines to establish stability—for example, daily yoga or meditation like anulom vilom (alternate nostril breathing), which can balance the mind and reduce overactivity. Also, monitor his diet to ensure it supports mental clarity. Foods that balance Vata, such as warm, cooked meals rich in natural fats, can be grounding and nourishing. Incorporate herbs like Ashwagandha; it is known for reducing stress and supporting mental well-being. Setting practical digital "detox" times, where he engages in physical activities or hobbies away from screens, can gently guide him towards healthier habits. Encourage group activities or sports, fostering his social circles beyond the digital space. Remember, professional guidance from a counselor experienced with teenagers or issues might also help him navigate these concerns effectively.
