which oil is good for hair - #23432

Mateo

I am really trying to figure out which oil is good for hair. Lately, my hair has been super dry and lifeless. Like, I’ve tried all sorts of shampoos and conditioners, but nothing seems to work. I read somewhere that oil can help, but there are so many types! Last week, I did a hot oil treatment with coconut oil and it kind of sort of helped but made my hair feel greasy, like, 24/7. And then I tried argan oil too, but I can’t tell if it’s actually doing anything. I feel like I'm just going round and round in circles here! I also heard that olive oil is pretty good, but does it really make a difference? Should I be looking for a certain brand or something, or is it just about finding the right oil? I am worried that if I don’t find the right one, my hair will just keep looking sad and lifeless. Can anyone share what oils have actually worked for them? Would love some suggestions on which oil is good for hair! Thanks!

Based on what's happened with your hair, it seems you might benefit from choosing an oil more suited to your current condition and dosha balance. In Ayurveda, hair dryness may relate to Vata aggravation; this calls for oils that are warming, nourishing, and grounding. Coconut oil is great, but if you feel it leaves your hair greasy, you might be using too much or leaving it on too long for your hair type. It’s better suited for those with Pitta or Kapha imbalances, as its cooling properties might not be ideal if Vata is your issue. Instead, try incorporating sesame oil, which is widely revered in Ayurveda for its nourishing and lubricative properties. It can penetrate deeply into hair follicles, feeding them and improving blood circulation to the scalp. To use, warm up some sesame oil slightly (it should be comfortable to the touch!) and apply it to your scalp and hair. Massage gently with your fingertips for about 10-15 minutes. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes—up to overnight—before you wash it out with a mild shampoo. Doing this once or twice a week could promote better moisture balance and reduce hair dryness. Olive oil can indeed be helpful too. It works well as a hot oil treatment; its moisturizing properties can be significant. However, make sure to use extra virgin olive oil, which is the least processed and retains the most nutrients. Also, consider supporting your hair health externally with diet and hydration. Ensure you're consuming a good variety of fatty acids (like omega-3) found in nuts and seeds, while keeping hydrated by drinking plenty of water. Lastly, stress can take a toll on hair health, so incorporating calming practices like yoga or meditation might help support your hair, too. Do continue to monitor the condition of your hair. If issues persist, consulting with an Ayurveda practitioner who can offer personalized evaluation of your dosha and any underlying imbalances could provide further insights.
