I am really confused and a bit worried about my recent health issues. Last month, I went for a check-up because I’ve been feeling a lot of pain in my joints, especially my big toe. It hurt so bad! The doctor said I have high uric acid levels, and I had no clue what that meant until he explained it. He mentioned something about how "which food increase uric acid" could make my situation worse. I love foods like red meat and shellfish, but I wasn’t aware how much they could contribute to my problems. I also eat a lot of sugary drinks and even some veggies like spinach, thinking they were healthy. Now I’m scared to eat anything because I really need to lower my uric acid levels. Can someone please help with a list or suggestions on “which food increase uric acid” that I should totally avoid? I need to make some changes, and fast! Hoping to get some clear advice here. Thank you!

Understanding uric acid and its implications can definitely be a bit overwhelming, but let’s try to make sense of it. Uric acid is a waste product found in blood. It’s formed when the body breaks down purines, which are substances found in various foods. Now, if your body creates too much uric acid or doesn’t get rid of enough of it, it can build up and form crystals in the joints, leading to pain and inflammation, like what you’re experiencing in your big toe.

When it comes to foods that increase uric acid, red meats and shellfish are indeed at the top of the list. They’re high in purines, so reducing their intake can be an effective step. However, the list doesn’t stop there. It’s also important to be cautious with foods like organ meats (think liver or kidneys), which are particularly high in purines.

Sugary drinks, especially those sweetened with high fructose corn syrup, can also contribute to higher uric acid levels. This includes sodas and sugary beverages that many of us consume daily without a second thought. It’s essential to minimize or even eliminate these from your diet for now.

As for certain vegetables like spinach, mushrooms, and asparagus, they do contain purines too, but they’re less likely to have a significant impact on uric acid levels when compared to animal-based sources.

In Ayurveda, balancing the doshas is critical, and high uric acid can often be linked to imbalances, especially in the Kapha and Pitta doshas. You might want consider incorporating foods that enhance your digestive fire, or agni, like ginger– it’s often recommended in Ayurvedic diets for its anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits.

And don’t forget about hydration! Drinking plenty of water can aid in flushing out excess uric acid. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water a day. Herbal teas like green tea or tulsi (holy basil) tea are beneficial too.

Adding physical activity as appropriate for you in moderation can also help, just avoid overexerting the afflicted joints.

If you’re feeling uncertain, it might be helpful to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can give you tailored suggestions based on your unique prakriti, or constitutional type, and any imbalances you might have. Making these changes doesn’t just have to be about what to avoid, but also about what you can embrace for better health.
