can diabetic patient eat curd - #25520

Caroline

I am really confused about my diet lately. I was diagnosed with diabetes a few months ago, and I've been trying to stick to what my doctor said, but it's hard! I heard from a friend that curd is good for digestion and all that, but can a diabetic patient eat curd? Like, does it have a lot of sugar? Some days, I feel like I’m regulating my blood sugar, but other days, I just crave more variety in my meals and snacks. If curd is okay, does that mean it should be plain or are those flavored ones alright too? My last blood test showed my sugar levels have been okay, but I want to make sure I'm not making things worse. I keep hearing mixed things, like some say dairy is bad, others say it's fine! Can a diabetic patient eat curd daily without worrying too much? Say if I have it for breakfast with some fruits, is that a bad idea? Just feeling a bit lost here, any advice would help!

In Ayurveda, curd, or dahi, is indeed a beneficial food when taken correctly. For diabetic patients, plain curd can be an excellent addition to the diet. It helps with digestion and offers probiotics, which are beneficial for gut health—important in managing various bodily functions including metabolism. When you're considering sugar content, the flavored or sweetened versions often have added sugars, which are best avoided in diabetes management. Stick with plain, unsweetened curd. If you're aiming for variety, a touch of spice or herbs can enhance its flavor without compromising your blood sugar levels. A pinch of cumin or coriander powder can do wonders. If your blood sugar levels are stable, having curd as part of a breakfast can be quite nourishing. Try pairing it with low-glycemic fruits like berries or a few slices of apple. The fiber in these fruits can help balance the overall glycemic load. Avoid high-sugar fruits like bananas or mangoes in large portions. From an Ayurvedic perspective, timing is crucial. Consuming curd during the daytime, particularly around breakfast or lunch, aligns with its qualities and your body's digestion (agni). Evening consumption is discouraged as it might impede digestion and increase congestion. Remember, moderation is key. While daily consumption is generally acceptable, observe how your body responds. If digestive discomfort, such as bloating or heaviness, arises, reduce portion or frequency. And of course, always consider the personal dosha balance and any specific medical guidelines from your healthcare provider as your priority.
