Is there any Ayurvedic cure for Bilateral AVN in both hips - #26823

Justin Elanjickal

I am suffering from Bilateral AVN in both hips (stage3 for left hip and stage2 for right hip). Need to know if there is any ayurvedic medication which can permanently cure this condition. Have consulted orthopedic surgeons and they have advised hip replacement for both hips. Need an opinion with regards to this health condition.

Avascular necrosis (AVN) in hips, especially at stage 2 and stage 3, is indeed a serious condition. Ayurveda may offer support to manage symptoms, slow progression, and improve quality of life, but a “permanent cure” through Ayurvedic treatment alone isn’t likely, especially in advanced stages. Close consultation with your ortho is crucial as surgical intervention might be necessary to prevent further damage and extensive disability.

In Ayurveda, AVN can be understood as a disruption in the bone tissue health, possibly due to vitiation of Vata dosha. Ayurveda’s focus would be on strengthening dhatus (tissues) and enhancing circulation through lifestyle modifications and herbal therapies.

1. Herbal Remedies: Ashwagandha and Guggulu are traditionally used to strengthen bones and improve joint health. Preparation like Amrit Bhallatak Avaleha can be beneficial in improving bone strength. Herbal oils such as Mahanarayan or Dhanwantharam oil may help in pain reduction when used in external massage (with gentle heat application).

2. Dietary Suggestions: Eating warm, nourishing foods that balance Vata is vital. Include ghee, dairy products, sesame seeds, and almond in your diet. These are said to nourish the bone tissues. Avoid caffeine, alcohol, and cold, dry foods that aggravate Vata.

3. Therapies: Panchakarma therapies, especially Abhyanga (oil massage) and Basti (medicated enema), might provide relief in reducing pain and promoting circulation. Consultation with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner is essential before starting these.

4. Yoga and Physical Activity: Gentle yoga, avoiding positions that strain hips, can support flexibility and strength. Practices such as Marichyasana and Malasana can be beneficial but must be carried out under guidance considering your condition.

These approaches can complement allopathic treatment but not substitute the potential need for surgery in later stages. It is essential to continously follow up with medical professionals to monitor your condition closely.

Bilateral Avascular Necrosis (AVN) in the hips, particularly at stages 2 and 3, is a challenging condition where blood supply to the bone is compromised, leading to bone destruction. Ayurveda, rooted in holistic principles, often emphasizes balancing the doshas (vata, pitta, kapha), which relate to the body’s fundamental energies, to address such health issues.

In your case, though Ayurveda can offer supportive measures, it’s important to realize that it cannot substitute surgical interventions like hip replacement when advised by orthopedic surgeons. AVN at stage 3 suggests significant bone damage, requiring immediate and appropriate intervention to avoid further joint deterioration.

That said, while awaiting or complementing conventional treatments, you may focus on supporting bone health and circulation through Ayurvedic approaches. Consuming herbs like Ashwagandha, Shatavari, and Guggulu may help in nourishing the asthi dhatu (bone tissue) and potentially support joint health to some extent. Apply warm Mahanarayan oil gently to the affected areas to help improve circulation and relieve discomfort. Yoga and mild joint exercises should only be undertaken with the guidance of a healthcare provider to avoid strain.

Ensuring proper diet, stress management, and regular sleep cycles can assist in maintaining overall health. Minimize foods and habits that elevate vata (cold, dry, and rough qualities), focusing instead on warm, moisturized, easily digestible foods.

While Ayurvedic remedies can complement and aid in the healing process, they work best in conjunction with and not as replacements to life-saving interventions. Always coordinate with your healthcare team when considering alternative treatments alongside medical advice, particularly in conditions of serious concern like AVN.
