PUJ calculus treatment - #3106

Zoey

I was diagnosed with a kidney stone in the PUJ (pelvi-ureteric junction) during my recent scan, and I want to know if there’s an effective puj calculus treatment in Ayurveda. Can anyone share remedies or treatments for managing this condition naturally? The pain is intermittent but severe when it comes, usually on one side of my lower back. I’ve been told that the stone is small, so I might pass it naturally, but I’d like to speed up the process. Does Ayurveda offer any puj calculus treatment that can dissolve or help expel the stone? If anyone has tried Ayurvedic puj calculus treatment, how long did it take to see results? Are there specific herbs or tonics that are especially effective? I’ve read about gokshura and punarnava being used for kidney stones – are these part of the treatment? Any advice on diet or lifestyle changes to prevent future kidney stones would also be helpful. Should I avoid certain foods or drink more herbal teas?

Doctors' responses

In Ayurveda, managing a kidney stone, especially one located at the pelvi-ureteric junction (PUJ), typically involves using natural remedies that help dissolve the stone, reduce pain, and facilitate its expulsion from the body. Gokshura and punarnava are indeed commonly used herbs for kidney stones. Gokshura is known for its diuretic properties, helping to increase urine flow and flush out toxins, while punarnava has anti-inflammatory and diuretic qualities that can help reduce swelling and ease the passage of stones. Other herbs like varuna, safaid musli, and bhumi amla can also be beneficial for promoting kidney health and breaking down small stones.

The treatment for PUJ calculus in Ayurveda focuses not only on herbal remedies but also on lifestyle and dietary changes to support kidney function and prevent future stones. To help expel the stone, drinking herbal teas made from ingredients like coriander, basil, and barley water can be effective, as they promote hydration and facilitate the movement of stones through the urinary tract. It’s important to stay well-hydrated, as dehydration can increase the risk of stone formation and make passing a stone more difficult.

In terms of diet, it’s recommended to avoid foods that are high in oxalates (such as spinach, beets, and nuts) and reduce salt and animal protein intake, as these can contribute to stone formation. A diet rich in fruits and vegetables, along with proper hydration, can help prevent the formation of new stones. Avoiding excessive intake of caffeine, alcohol, and sugary drinks is also advised, as these can dehydrate the body and worsen the condition.

As for the timeline, Ayurvedic treatments may take several weeks to months to show noticeable results, and it’s important to be patient while using these remedies. The stone may be passed naturally with consistent use of these herbs, but it’s crucial to monitor the condition closely. If you experience severe pain or complications, it’s best to consult with both an Ayurvedic practitioner and a urologist to ensure the proper treatment plan.

Ah, dealing with a small stone in the PUJ can be quite uncomfortable, but Ayurveda does have some insightful ways to lend a hand. First off, since you’re experiencing severe pain, it’s really important to stay hydrated. Water is key to flushing out the stone naturally. Aim for warm water, sipped through the day – this supports your agni, or digestive fire, keeping your system in balance.

You’re spot on mentioning gokshura and punarnava. These two herbs are often celebrated in Ayurveda for their renal-supportive properties. Gokshura, known for its diuretic properties, can help increase urine flow, potentially aiding in stone expulsion. As for punarnava, it’s said to support kidney health by reducing inflammation and assisting in detoxification. Look for these in capsule form or as part of a tea blend, but always consult with a practitioner to ensure proper dosing.

On the dietary front, you might consider cutting back on foods that aggravate vata and kapha, like excessive salt, red meat, and heavy dairy – they could contribute to stone formation. Opt for light, cooked meals like vegetable soups, rice, and incorporate spices like cumin and coriander to better your digestion. Oh, and limit caffeine, it can sometimes cause dehydration.

Lifestyle is another thing to tweak. Regularly practicing yoga, especially poses focused on the lower back, might offer some relief and gentle stimulation to your urinary system. And breathing exercises can sometimes surprisingly ease pain when that stone decides to make its presence known.

Results can vary, naturally – some folks see shifts in just a week or two, others might need a bit more time. It’s all about listening to your body and allowing these gentle practices to work their magic. But in any case, do be careful and if pain becomes unbearable or symptoms shift dramatically, don’t hesitate to reach out for medical help pronto. Ayurveda is a wonderful friend but recognizing when you need a doctor is crucial.

Hope some of these suggestions bring a sprinkle of comfort on the path to passing that pesky stone!
