how breast cancer occurs - #36745

Scarlett

I am really confused and worried about something I've been trying to understand. I found a lump in my breast a few weeks ago, and after going to the doc, I was told I need to have a biopsy to rule out cancer. I keep thinking about how breast cancer occurs and what causes it. I mean, I always believed that it was mainly linked to genetic factors or age, but I also read articles that mentioned lifestyle, diet, and even environmental factors playing a huge role in how breast cancer occurs. My aunt had breast cancer a few years back, and it’s just freaking me out. I smoke occasionally and don’t eat the healthiest food, and now I'm paranoid that these habits might be contributing to how breast cancer occurs! I've been trying to make changes, like switching to organic food and cutting down on sugar, but is it too late? Can lifestyle changes really make a difference in how breast cancer occurs in someone like me, who’s already freaking out about a possible diagnosis? Anyone else gone through something similar? What did you find out about how breast cancer occurs? I really need some clarity here because all this stress is not helping at all!

Doctors' responses

Breast cancer’s occurrence is a complex interplay of various factors, not just genetics or age alone. Indeed, genetics play a significant role; mutations in genes like BRCA1 and BRCA2 are famous culprits, making them well know as risk factors. However, both lifestyle and environmental factors contribute substantially to the risk profile. This might be daunting, but it also means you have agency to impact these factors positively.

In Ayurveda, breast tissue corresponds to ‘Rasa dhatu’ — the primary tissue formed from digested nutrients, which can be influenced by dietary habits and lifestyle. Maintaining balance across the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha) is key. Dietary imbalances, like excessive consumption of processed foods or sugar-laden items, may disturb ‘agni’ (digestive fire), leading to ama (toxins) accumulation, which can create a fertile ground for various diseases.

Practical lifestyle changes can indeed reduce risk. Opt for a Sattvic diet rich in whole foods, cereals like quinoa or barley, fresh fruits and vegetables, especially cruciferous ones like broccoli & cabbage. These foods are believed to cleanse ‘oesha’ (tissue channels). Drinking warm ginger tea can help enhance digestive fire, thus reducing ama formation. Avoid reheated, stale, or highly processed foods, as they might aggravate Kapha dosha, which is linked with excess tissue growth and accumulation.

Regular physical activity assists in balancing Kapha and reduces obesity — a known breast cancer risk factor. Even walking 30 minutes a day can be powerful. Yoga, especially poses that stretch and strengthen the chest area, could support your breast health by promoting better circulation.

Regarding smoking, it’s wise to cease, not only due to general health concerns but because tobacco might inflame the tissues and disturb the doshic balance, increasing risk factors. Reducing alcohol intake also aligns with Ayurvedic principles, seeing it as advisable to maintain clarity in mind and body.

It’s essential to keep your mind at peace too – stress, and anxiety can imbalance Vata dosha, which indirectly affects other doshas and their functioning. Meditation or pranayama (breathing exercises) could stabilize emotional turmoil.

Do remember that you should comply with medical advice you are receiving, while these Ayurveda practices may supplement your overall health strategy. A balanced lifestyle often positively impacts disease prevention and progression, but medical intervention is key. Consider consulting a certified Ayurvedic practitioner who can personalized guidance based on your specific constitution (prakriti) and current health status.

If in any doubt, especially with symptomatic concerns, it’s crucial to prioritize quick consultation and follow the medics’ recommendations on biopsies or any other necessary diagnostics or treatments.
