what are the disadvantages of masturbation - #37149

Bella

I am kinda confused about something and need some advice. Lately, I've been feeling a bit down, and I've noticed that I often turn to masturbation as a way to cope, like, when I'm stressed or just bored. I know it can be normal to do it sometimes, but I've heard some people mention that there are disadvantages of masturbation that I should be aware of. Like, just last week, I was feeling really anxious, and I ended up doing it a couple of times a day, which made me feel guilty later, right? I tried to do some research but I found mixed info online. Some places say it’s totally fine and helps relieve stress, but others mention that the disadvantages of masturbation might include it affecting relationships or even like, leading to more anxiety over time. I’m not sure what’s really true. I sometimes feel a bit tired and unmotivated after, and I keep questioning if I’m overdoing it or if it’s totally fine like I read. Has anyone else faced issues when it comes to the disadvantages of masturbation? I mean, I don't want it to mess with my mental health or anything. How do you guys cope with this? Just looking for some real experiences or insights here. Thanks!

Doctors' responses

The discourse around masturbation, particularly in relation to mental health and well-being, can indeed be varied and nuanced. From an Ayurvedic perspective, the practice isn’t innately harmful, but like any activity, moderation is key. Ayurveda emphasizes balance as much with lifestyle habits as with one’s internal constitution or dosha. Here’s how masturbation might interact with an individual’s health according to Ayurvedic principles:

Masturbation involves the release of shukra dhatu, the body’s reproductive tissue, which is considered highly valued in Ayurveda. Shukra dhatu is viewed as a concentrated life force, so excessive ejaculation can potentially deplete vital energy, especially if it’s habitual or compensates for underlying emotional or physiological imbalances. Some may experience fatigue or decreased motivation when this energy is overextended, which might be why you feel tired or unmotivated afterwards.

There’s also a psychological aspect. Engaging in masturbation as a response to stress or anxiety can initially seem relieving. However, if it’s repeatedly used as a coping mechanism, it may not address the root cause of these emotions, potentially exacerbating feelings of guilt or anxiety instead of resolving them. Conceiving a habit of reliance on masturbation when stressed might imply an imbalance in the rasa (emotional health) or manas (mental health).

To address these concerns, consider more holistic approaches to managing stress or boredom, ones that strengthen your adaptogenic response. Yoga and meditation help maintain a balanced mind and body, promoting conscious energy management. Try daily pranayama breathing exercises—20 minutes each morning can effectively extend calmness and mitigate stress.

Diet and routine alterations help immensely; ensure your agni (digestive fire) is strong, combining sattvic foods that nourish without overstimulating. Avoid overly spicy or sour foods, which could aggravate bodily heat or pitta dosha.

Consider limiting masturbation to when genuinely inspired by healthy desire, rather than as a habitual impulse. If guilt persists or impacts your mental state, a conversation with a qualified mental health professional implementing holistic mental health practices could offer clarity. Remember, Ayurveda is about personal balance, so tailor these suggestions reflecting your unique constitution and current lifestyle.

Masturbation is a natural activity but like anything, in excess, it can have some disadvantages. From an Ayurvedic perspective, it’s important to consider how it might be affecting your doshas—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Frequent masturbation could exacerbate Vata and Pitta imbalances. Vata dosha, when aggravated, might lead to anxiety, insomnia, or feelings of restlessness, which you mentioned. Similarly, increased Pitta may cause irritability and feelings of guilt or frustration.

One potential disadvantage of excessive masturbation is it can lead to depletion of Ojas, which is the essence of all body tissues and responsible for vitality and immunity. Over time, this can affect your energy levels, motivation, and overall mental clarity. Feeling tired and unmotivated like you described aligns with this depletion.

To manage this, focus on balance. Try grounding practices like Abhyanga (self-massage with warm sesame oil), which is calming to Vata, or practice calming breathing techniques like Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing) to stabilize both Vata and Pitta. Limit your exposure to stimulating media that might trigger anxiety or overstimulation. For mental serenity, integrate Brahmi or Ashwagandha in your daily routine, which aids in calming the mind and supporting healthy stress levels.

Keep an eye on your daily pattern—emotions, activities, and triggers that might lead you to masturbate more often than you wish. If you notice it’s becoming a compulsion, or influencing your emotional wellbeing, consider speaking with a healthcare professional to explore these concerns deeper and address any underlying issues. Your health and balance should always be the priority, so make changes that feel sustainable and supportive for you.
