is sugarcane juice heat for body - #37391
I am pretty confused right now about something I've been hearing a lot lately. I started drinking sugarcane juice becuz my friend said it was really good for energy, especially during the hot months. But then I went online and found all this stuff about whether is sugarcane juice heat for body... Like, is it bad to drink too much? I’ve been feeling kind of warm lately, especially after my workouts, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s from the sugarcane juice I’ve been having regularly. Some folks say it can give you heat in your body, while others are like “no way, it’s refreshing.” I’m just trying to figure it out. I mean, who wouldn’t love something that tastes that good and is natural? But then again, I also have some digestive issues sometimes, like bloating and stuff, and I think sugarcane juice could be making it worse?? Or at least i feel that way. Like is there a balance or something? Too much of anything is bad, right? Just a bit worried that I’m not doing the right things for my health. If anyone here can clear this up for me, like really — is sugarcane juice heat for body or what? Appreciate any info!

Doctors' responses
Sugarcane juice is generally considered to have a cooling effect on the body, which is especially beneficial during hot weather. However, it’s essential to understand that how it affects your body can depend on your individual Ayurvedic constitution, or ‘prakriti’. Each person has a unique balance of doshas—Vata, Pitta and Kapha—that can influence how they react to different foods and drinks.
For Pitta individuals, who typically have a ‘hotter’ constitution, sugarcane juice can indeed be quite soothing. But if you’re experiencing warmth or heat after drinking it, it might be due to other factors related to your lifestyle or constitution. It is possible that your diet or physical activity is contributing to this warmth, rather than the juice itself. Also, the time of consumption and the quantity can affect digestion and body responses.
In regard to digestive issues like bloating, sugarcane juice can cause fermentation if consumed excessively or at inappropriate times, like late evenings. If you already have a weak digestive fire (Agni), it might exacerbate bloating. It is advisable to consume sugarcane juice in moderation, particularly if you’re engaging in strenuous physical activities, which can naturally increase body heat.
To establish balance, pay attention to the quantity - a small glass around 150-200 ml daily should be sufficient. Try to consume it in the afternoon, when digestive fire is strongest. Make sure it’s fresh and non-fermented, as older juice can exacerbate digestive discomfort. Combining it with a pinch of ginger or a few drops of lemon can aid digestion, making it even more suitable.
Monitor the reaction of your body after consuming sugarcane juice. If warmth persists, consider reducing the quantity or frequency of intake. Balancing with hydrating foods and drinks, like coconut water or buttermilk, can also help manage the body’s heat. If symptoms continue or worsen, it may be wise to consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner who can offer a personalized approach to your dietary choices based on your dosha profile. Don’t hesitate to make adjustments to your intake based on how your body feels and reacts.
