can we do sex on amavasya - #37469
I am really confused about something I've heard regarding amavasya. Like, last week I was chatting with some friends who said that we should avoid, um, having sex on amavasya as it could bring bad vibes or something? I always thought it was just an old wives' tale, you know? Couple of days ago, I felt really intimate with my partner, but the timing was... well, you guessed it, it was amavasya! We kinda laughed about it but I couldn't shake off the feeling that maybe I should've thought twice. Yet, we were both feeling close and connected. Also, I've heard amavasya has like different impacts on different people, right? I mean, my friend had a really bad experience one amavasya, but others swear by it being totally fine. Now I'm worrying if there's any truth to these beliefs. Can we do sex on amavasya? Is there any scientific or Ayurvedic backing to this or is it just beliefs people have passed down? I really don’t want to invite any negative energies into our relationship! Ugh, am I overthinking this? Really hope to hear what you experts think!

When it comes to customs and beliefs around amavasya—often known as the new moon—there’s a good mix of cultural, astrological, and traditional perceptions. However, in terms of Ayurveda, the main focus is on balance and harmony between mind, body, and spirit. While there are cultural stories that suggest certain activities should be limited on amavasya, Ayurveda itself doesn’t specifically prohibit sexual activity on this particular day.
In Ayurvedic perspective, the act of sexual intercourse should be approached with consideration for one’s current health status, emotional state, and the balance of the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha). On any given day, engaging in sex is advised when your body is in a balanced state, your digestion is strong (agni is working well), and you have available energy. Timing can also be important based on your daily routine and the phase of your life (seasonal cycles can affect dosha balance), but this is more personal than tied to lunar cycles.
Amavasya is indeed seen as a time of new beginnings and self-reflection. It’s a great time for meditation and setting intentions. It doesn’t inherently carry negative connotation in Ayurveda. If you’n and your partner were in a state of emotional and physical harmony, and felt an authentic connection, the act could be beneficial and nourishing for both of you.
For those overly concerned about the energies of amavasya, it could be helpful to engage in grounding activities. Practicing calming yoga, consuming warm, sattvic foods or focusing on deep breathing exercises may support overall wellbeing at this time. If you’re still uncertain, I’d suggest focusing on what feels right based on your current mental, emotional and physical well-being rather than urban legends or folklore. Maintaining a balanced diet, enough rest, and mindful regular practices that soothe your doshas will be more impactful.
Remember, these cultural nuances can vary greatly by personal belief, so it is equally important to keep in firm touch with your own intuition and comfort level. If you feel uneasy with practicing a certain activity on particular days, it might be a sign to follow your instinct. But rest assured, there’s no direct Ayurveda teaching which outright discourages such intimacy on amavasya.
