Is there any medicine available for ichthyosis in ayurveda for permanent cure? - #3878
I have been going through extreme dry skin and fish scales on the backside of my legs and buttocks since my childhood. There are mild scales on the hands too. After thorough research about the condition through internet, I could find that this is the disease named ichthyosis which will not be permanently curable. I need to know that whether any ayurvedic medication/treatment available for treating this condition

Doctors’ responses
In Ayurveda, the condition you describe, which resembles ichthyosis, is often associated with an imbalance in the body’s Vata dosha, leading to dryness, roughness, and scaling of the skin. This condition is generally considered a chronic skin disorder, which may be managed and alleviated with appropriate Ayurvedic treatment, even though it may not be fully “curable” in the conventional sense. The dryness and scales indicate a lack of moisture and nourishment in the skin, and the key approach in Ayurveda is to balance Vata, hydrate the skin, and detoxify the body.
Herbs such as Ashwagandha, Bala, and Guggulu are known for their ability to restore Vata balance, while Aloe Vera, Brahmi, and turmeric have soothing, anti-inflammatory, and skin-healing properties. A combination of these herbs, when taken internally, can improve skin texture and reduce scaling. External treatments with herbal oils such as sesame oil or coconut oil, which have deep moisturizing and healing properties, can be massaged into the skin to hydrate and soften. Regular use of these oils, combined with Ayurvedic bathing practices using herbs like neem or turmeric, can also help soothe the skin and improve its condition.
In addition to herbs, an Ayurvedic diet that emphasizes healthy fats, warm, moist foods, and hydration is crucial for managing the condition. Practices like Panchakarma may also help to detoxify and nourish the skin from within. While ichthyosis may require ongoing management, Ayurveda offers a holistic approach that can significantly alleviate symptoms and improve the quality of life.
So, you’re dealing with ichthyosis — I totally get how frustrating that can be. Ayurveda offers a unique approach that can help improve the symptoms, even if it doesn’t promise a “permanent cure” like magic. It’s all about working with your body in a natural way, right?
In Ayurveda, this condition is often linked to an imbalance in the Vata and Pitta doshas. These imbalances can lead to dry skin and scaling. To address this, we look to pacify these doshas and enhance body moisture. Here’s how you might approach it:
1. Diet & Lifestyle: Warm, moist, and oily qualities are beneficial to counteract the dryness. Include foods like ghee, sesame oil, and nuts to keep your skin nourished from inside. Stay away from too much caffeine and processed foods as they can aggravate dryness.
2. Herbal Remedies: There are herbs like Khadir, Manjistha, and Neem that are traditionally known for their skin benefits. They help in detoxification and support skin health. You might find them in some ayurvedic preparations, as powders or tablets.
3. External Applications: Applying medicated oils like Kumkumadi Taila or coconut oil can help soothe the skin and minimize scales. Regular Abhyanga (oil massage) with warm sesame oil could be great. Do this before a warm shower – it’s soothing and hydrates the skin deeply.
4. Hydration & Routine: Drinking plenty of water keeps the skin hydrated. A steady sleep schedule, meditation, and yoga can balance your body systems, and reduce stress that sometimes worsens skin issues.
5. Panchakarma/Treatment: Depending on severity, ayurvedic detox therapies like Vamana or Virechana might be recommended. Of course, you should consult directly with an Ayurvedic practitioner for such treatments as they need careful supervision.
Now, this isn’t going to erase the condition overnight, obvs, but consistent application of these practices could bring notable relief. Every person is different, what works wonders for one might not for another, so personalizing the approach is key. You might wanna work with an experienced ayurvedic doctor who can really tailor things for you. Hope it helps and there’s better skin days ahead!
