is curd good in cold and cough - #41859

Leo

I am really struggling with this nasty cold and cough that just won’t go away. It started last week with a sore throat and now it feels like I’m stuck in this annoying cycle of sneezing and coughing. I tried some over-the-counter meds, but they didn’t really help that much, and I’m just fed up with it. A friend mentioned that maybe I should try adding curd to my diet? But honestly, I’m confused about it. Is curd good in cold and cough situations? I’ve heard mixed things. Like, some people say dairy isn’t great when you're sick because it can produce more mucus, ugh, but then others say it’s soothing and helps with digestion or whatever. I usually have curd with my meals, especially when I’m feeling fine! It’s one of those foods I love, but now I’m wondering if eating it might actually make my cold worse. Should I just ditch it altogether until I’m better, or can I enjoy it in moderation? Also, I tried some home remedies using honey and ginger, but they haven't done much either. Any advice would seriously help, I just want to feel like myself again!

In Ayurveda, the use of curd during conditions like cold and cough can require careful consideration. Curd, or yogurt, has an inherently heavy and dense nature, which Ayurveda describes as “guru.” It’s believed to increase kapha dosha, associated with qualities like cold, heaviness and could potentially lead to increased mucus production. Since colds and coughs typically involve aggravated kapha, it’s often recommended to avoid curd when experiencing these symptoms.

However, the complete avoidance of curd might not be necessary for everyone. It helps when consumed in specific ways. If you wish to include curd in your diet, opt for it during the daytime when your digestive fire or “Agni” is stronger. Ensure it is fresh and not sour, as old or sour curd can aggravate symptoms further. Mixing curd with some warm spices such as ginger or black pepper can help counterbalance its kapha-aggravating properties.

For soothing your throat and cough, warm herbal teas can valuable, like a decoction of ginger, tulsi (basil), and a pinch of turmeric. You might find relief using trikatu, a classic Ayurvedic combination of ginger, long pepper (pippali) and black pepper, which helps stimulate digestion and balance kapha. Honey, known for its expectorant properties, can be used with these herbs but only in moderation as too much sweetness also heightens kapha.

To further your recovery, try to include warm, easily digestible foods like soups or broths. Incorporate spices like cumin, fennel, and coriander in your meals. Avoid cold or raw foods, which can further weaken your digestion and immunity during this time.

The home remedies you mentioned, like honey and ginger, are generally aligned with Ayurvedic principles. You might want to be patient, gentler remedies sometimes require some time and consistency. Focus on maintaining warmth and hydration. If symptoms persist or worsen, it’s always advisable to consult with a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying conditions that may require more immediate medical attention.

When dealing with a cold and cough, especially as persistent, you might consider moderating your intake of curd. According to Siddha-Ayurvedic principles, curd is considered to have cooling properties and can aggravate Kapha. Since cold and cough are generally associated with an imbalance in the Kapha dosha, consuming curd, particularly in the evening, might not be the best idea.

Curd has a natural tendency to increase mucus production—something you naturally want to avoid when you’re experiencing cold symptoms. However, if you usually enjoy curd and feel it’s an important part of your diet, you can have it in moderation, preferably during when your digestive fire, or agni, is at its peak, like during lunch. Make sure it’s fresh and not sour. Adding a pinch of black pepper or dry ginger powder to the curd can help mitigate its Kapha increasing qualities a bit.

Apart from this, continue with your home remedies like honey and ginger if they generally provide relief, although they may take some time to show results. Honey, especially, is considered effective in pacifying Kapha and easing a cough. You might also want to try warm herbal teas infused with tulsi (holy basil), ginger, or licorice root, which are indicated for respiratory issues.

While you experiment with dietary changes, listen to your body. If symptoms persist or worsen significantly, seeking in-person consultation with a qualified healthcare provider is advised. Such persistent colds may sometimes require more detailed examination for underlying causes that need attention. Remember, it’s important to align remedies to your unique constitution and the specific characteristics of your symptoms.
