Doctors' responses
Dealing with Parkinson’s for such an extended period can understandably be challenging. While continuing her prescribed treatment is essential, Ayurveda can offer adjunct support to alleviate some of the symptoms your wife faces.
Firstly, consider introducing her to Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera). This herb is known for its adaptogenic properties, and may help with stress and sleeplessness. You might try giving her Ashwagandha tablets, about 500 mg, twice daily after food. Be sure to discuss this with her current healthcare provider redoucing any risk of interactions.
Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) is another valuable herb that promotes better sleep and cognitive function. A decoction using Brahmi leaves can be prepared by boiling a small handful in water, straining, and giving it to her in the evening. Again, checking with her neurologist is advisable.
Fostering a routine with Abhyanga (Ayurvedic oil massage) using warm sesame or Mahanarayan oil might help calm her nerves and improve sleep quality. These massages can be done daily or at least three times a week.
Dietary-wise, ensure she takes light, easily digestible meals. Incorporate foods that are rich in antioxidants, like Amlas (Indian gooseberry), which promote nerve health. Avoiding heavy, fried, or excessively spicy foods could prevent exacerbating symptoms.
For her lifestyle diversify activities that bring clawmness. Meditation, gentle Yoga, and pranayama can help stabilize emotional states. These activities should be carried out under supervision if she is new to them.
Always consult her neurologist before starting any new treatment, herb, or routine to ensure no adverse effects given her current medication and overall health. Balancing modern medicine with these supplementary methods could potentially improve quality of life without interfering with primary treatment.
