Doctors' responses
Optic atrophy involves degeneration of the optic nerve, leading to vision loss. In Ayurveda, focus on improving overall eye health, addressing underlying imbalances, and supporting the nervous system is crucial. Given the current vision loss, immediate recovery may be difficult, however, Ayurvedic methods aim at slowing progression and possibly enhancing remaining function.
Primary considerations involve managing the prana vata, responsible for optic health, and balancing kapha, as it may contribute to sluggishness in nerve functionality due to imbalanced sugar levels from diabetes. Control diabetes strictly, prioritizing balanced sugar levels.
Dietary guidelines are essential. Incorporate foods nourishing for the eyes and nerves. Amla (Indian gooseberry) is rich in vitamin C and antioxidants, making it beneficial. Consume it daily, fresh or as powder, with warm water. Likewise, ghee (clarified butter) infused with triphala—an Ayurvedic combination of three fruits—may be beneficial. Taking warm ghee with Triphala at night assists in detoxifying and nourishing nerves.
Herbs like Ashwagandha and Brahmi are traditionally used to support nerve health and should be considered under guidance. Ashwagandha strengthens the nervous sytem, while Brahmi boosts cognitive and nerve function. Pay attention to digestion through regular, light, and easy-to-digest meals supporting agni (digestive fire).
Regular practice of Trataka, an eye exercise involving focused gazing, might promote ocular health. Engage in this for a few minutes but not to the point of strain. Complement this with adequate sleep and stress reduction through yoga or meditation, benefiting overall health and eye function.
Consult an Ayurvedic practitioner to customize a treatment plan fitting your situation and verify compatibility of herbs and practices with existing treatments and conditions. Always discuss new approaches with your current medical team to ensure safety and appropriateness, especially considering previous stem cell intervention.
