Mood swings, cravings for sweets, and menstrual irregularities can be linked to an imbalance in the doshas. In the Siddha-Ayurvedic tradition, these symptoms often relate to heightened Vata and sometimes Pitta doshas. Here’s what you might consider.
To calm Vata and balance Pitta, start by incorporating oil massages (abhyanga) using warmed sesame oil. This practice grounds Vata and soothes Pitta, reducing mood swings. Spend about 15 minutes on self-massage daily before showering.
Next, focus on your diet. Favor warm, cooked meals that nourish and pacify Vata, such as rice, whole grains, legumes, and cooked vegetables. Avoid excessive caffeine, cold foods, and processed sugars, which aggravate both Vata and Pitta. Instead of sweets, try jaggery, a natural sweetener less aggravating to the system.
For herbal support, consider Ashwagandha, known for its ability to stabilize mood and reduce stress. You can take this in powder form, about half a teaspoon, mixed with warm milk in the evening. Additionally, Shatavari, useful for balancing hormones, can be consumed as a decoction. Prepare it by boiling a tablespoon of Shatavari root powder with two cups of water until reduced by half, then drink it once cooled, twice a day.
It’s essential to maintain a good routine, prioritizing regular sleep hours to help with mood stability. Avoid heavy meals late at night which can disturb your agni.
If the mood swings become intense or if you’re experiencing significant changes in your menstrual cycle that concern you, it might be necessary to consult a healthcare professional to rule out any other underlying issues.
