Doctors' responses

Sudden oil build-up on skin is often linked with an imbalance in your body’s doshas, particularly an increase in Pitta and possibly also Kapha. Stress, diet, lifestyle, and even seasonal changes can contribute to this condition. Although using a seborrheic dermatitis shampoo is a good step, it seems there may be a more systemic imbalance needing attention.

To start, consider your dietary choices. Increase intake of cooling and detoxifying foods. Favor leafy greens, cucumber, and gourds like pumpkin, as they help pacify Pitta. Avoid spicy, oily, fried, and fermented foods that could aggravate Pitta. Emphasise drinking room temperature or lukewarm water to help keep the skin hydrated from within and to support detoxification.

Daily practice of 10-15 minutes of meditation or deep breathing exercises can significantly reduce stress and its effects on the skin. Such practices will help balance the nervous system and may lead to decreased oil production. Consider pranayama techniques like Sheetali - a cooling breathwork that calms aggravated Pitta.

Topically, apply a thin layer of neem oil or tea tree oil mixed with a carrier oil like jojoba on affected areas, especially before bedtime. These oils have antibacterial properties and can alleviate inflammation. You might also benefit from using ubtan – a natural face and body scrub made from chickpea flour, turmeric, and sandalwood powder. Use it gently on skin twice a week to cleanse and rejuvenate.

Pay attention to your routine, aim to sleep by 10 pm. Adjusting your sleep-wake cycle helps regulate hormonal balance, counteracting excessive oil production. If issues persist, consider seeking an Ayurvedic practitioner who can provide more personalized guidance. Immediate medical attention might not be necessary unless symptoms worsen.
