Managing Graves’ Disease with Ayurveda involves a comprehensive approach due to its involvement with the thyroid and broader systemic issues. Addressing your symptoms requires balancing the doshas, particularly Pitta, which may be aggravated. Firstly, it is essential to consult an endocrinologist or your primary healthcare provider. Conventional medical management is crucial for conditions like Graves’ Disease due to potential complications.
In Ayurvedic practise, consider incorporating Ashwagandha as it is known for its adaptogenic properties, potentially aiding in stress reduction and thyroid function balance. Consume it in powdered form, about 5 grams mixed with warm milk, once daily, after a meal. For proptosis, gentle eye exercises like focusing on an object at a distance, followed by near focusing can improve muscle strength. Applying a paste of Triphala powder and water around the eyes may also help; leave it on for 15 minutes and then rinse.
Dietary guidance stresses a Pitta-pacifying diet. Avoid spicy, oily and acidic foods. Favor cooling foods like cucumbers, leafy greens, and ripe fruits. Hydration with herbal teas such as Brahmi tea could support calming the mind and body. Avoid stimulants like coffee which may worsen heart palpitations and insomnia. Small, frequent meals can help ease bloating.
Practicing gentle yoga or pranayama (breathing exercises) can help manage stress, though avoid intense physical activity, which exacerbates palpitations. Anulom-Vilom pranayama (alternate nostril breathing) can be deeply calming; practice it daily for 10 minutes, ideally in the morning when your mind is fresh.
For goitre, gently massage the area with warm Ksheerabala oil to promote circulation, taking care not to exert pressure. This should be done softly, once a day. Above all, regular follow-ups with your medical doctor to monitor thyroid health are crucial as Ayurvedic practices can complement but should not replace conventional medical treatment in serious conditions like yours…
