I have pits on my nails and I read somewhere that it may be linked to psoriasis or eczema. Is there a way I can prevent from getting them before it turns out to be something serious?

Nail pitting, as you’ve read, can indeed be associated with skin conditions like psoriasis or eczema. From an Ayurvedic perspective, such nail changes often indicate imbalances in the body’s doshas, specifically Pitta and Kapha. To prevent the progression of these symptoms, attention on balancing these doshas is crucial.

Start by examining your diet. An excess of spicy, fried, and processed foods can agitate Pitta dosha, while heavy, oily, and excessively sweet foods can aggravate Kapha. Incorporate more cooling, soothing foods like cucumber, cilantro, and green leafy vegetables to balance Pitta. To keep Kapha in check, prefer light meals with more bitter and astringent tastes, such as those in beans and lentils.

Hydration is key. Warm water infused with a slice of ginger or a squeeze of lemon helps maintain digestion and balance Pitta. Avoid ice-cold beverages which might disrupt your digestive fire, or Agni, leading to toxin buildup.

Self-massage with warm coconut or sesame oil can be beneficial. This Abhyanga practice not only aids stress reduction but also helps nourish nails and skin. Ensure you’re not applying too much pressure, which can irritate sensitive areas.

Pay attention to stress levels. Practices like yoga, meditation, or deep breathing exercises help pacify the mind and can balance the doshas. Stress is a known trigger for skin conditions, and managing it can prevent symptoms from worsening.

Consult a dermatologist or healthcare provider if the pitting worsens or if you notice other signs like joint discomfort or skin changes. Ayurvedic remedies are a supportive approach but should not replace professional medical evaluation when necessary. By maintaining awareness of your diet, lifestyle, and stress levels, you’re working proactively towards preventing these nail issues from becoming severe.
