Namaste, Swelling in the feet along with breathing difficulty in an elderly person with diabetes should be taken seriously, as it may sometimes be related to fluid retention, heart strain, kidney issues, or circulation problems. Since these symptoms started recently within one week, it is very important to consult a doctor or visit a hospital soon for proper evaluation. Simple supportive measures that may help: Keep her feet slightly elevated while resting to reduce swelling. Avoid excess salt and very heavy meals. Ensure she takes her diabetes medicines regularly and monitors blood sugar. Observe if the swelling increases, breathing becomes more difficult, or fatigue increases, and seek medical attention immediately if this happens. At her age and with diabetes history, proper medical examination and tests may be needed to identify the exact cause. Ayurvedic medicines sometimes used to support fluid balance include: Punarnavadi Kashayam – traditionally used to support fluid metabolism and swelling. Gokshuradi Guggulu – sometimes used to support urinary health and fluid balance. Consult me for more advice and suggestions on the above medicines.

At the age of 75, swelling in the feet along with breathing difficulty, especially with a 10-year history of diabetes, should not be ignored. These symptoms can sometimes be related to heart function, kidney problems, fluid retention, or uncontrolled diabetes, so proper evaluation is important. You should consult a doctor and get the following important tests done as soon as possible: • Blood sugar tests – Fasting Blood Sugar, Post-prandial Sugar, HbA1c • Kidney Function Test (KFT) – Urea, Creatinine • Liver Function Test (LFT) • Serum Electrolytes • Urine Routine Examination • Complete Blood Count (CBC) • ECG • 2D Echocardiography (Echo) • Chest X-ray These tests will help determine whether the swelling is related to heart issues, kidney function, diabetes control, or fluid accumulation. Until evaluation: • Reduce salt intake • Keep the legs slightly elevated while resting • Monitor blood sugar regularly If the breathing difficulty increases, please seek immediate medical attention and do not delay consultation.

Hello, First of all you should not take this lightly. These are sign increase load on heart with later cause breathing difficulty and emergency situation. I first need answers to these questions- Does the swelling leave a pit when pressed with finger? Is her breathing worse when lying down? Is urine output normal or reduced? If: Her Breathing worsening when lying down Increasing swelling of legs or face Chest pain Very low urine output Confusion Very weak to do her own works You should get these test done asap: Blood pressure Oxygen level Blood sugar Kidney function test (urea, creatinine) ECG and possibly ECHO Chest X-ray Also, at home you can help her with- Keep her head elevated while lying down. Reduce salt intake in food. Ask her to avoid lying completely flat if breathing worsens. Check blood sugar regularly. If it all comes normal then you can rely on just medicines.
