Seeking Ayurvedic Stool Softener for Chronic Constipation - #35916

Aaron Meyler
$3.51

What is the best natural non stimulant stool softener laxative used in Ayurvedic medicine. I am having to take magnesium oxide,. Y diet is good high fibre vegetarian based lots of water but the problem goes in for 2 months. I belive it was caused by both antiobiotics, catheter, then western laxatives Ducolax for about 3.5 weeks and docusate for about 2.5 weeks the latter did nothing and when I used it was when I developed pencil thin stools. Since stopping I have been using magnesium oxide which is helping but having to take a high dose and bowel movements can be unpredictable. I would like to find an Ayurvedic medicine I can take daily currently I take triaphla 2 tablets on a morning but not seeing many results been using it about 2 weeks

Magnesium oxide should not be continued for long the pattern which you are mentioning is a classical post antibiotic and post stimulant laxative constipation pattern After continuous usage like dulcolax if you stop then they forget the natural rhythm Start on Haritaki churna 1 tsp with warm water at bedtime Abhaya aristha 15-0-15 ml with warm water If stools dry take 1/2 tsp isabgol Drink 1/2 tsp cow ghee with warm water at morning

HELLO AARON,

Your symptoms suggest chronic constipation, which can lead or to be associated with

1) DIETRY ISSUES -low fibre intake - insufficient water consumption

2) LIFESTYLE FACTORS -sedentry habits - ignoring the urge to pass stool - stress and anxiety

Ayurvedic views constipation as a vata imbalance, particularly apana vata, which governs elimination. Hard stools and dryness point to excessive dryness in the colon.

Likely involved - vata prakopa(aggravation of vata) - dry, cold, rough qualities dominating

TREATMENT GOALS 1) soften and regulate stools 2) heal and reduce pain 3) Balance vata dosha 4) improves digestive strength 5) prevent recurrence

START INTERNALLY WITH -these target vata imbalance, dry stools and poor bowel movement

MILD DAILY LAXATIVES

1) TRIPHALA CHURNA= 1 tsp with warm water at bedtime =softens stool, promotes complete evacuation, rejuvinates colon

2) HARITAKI CHURNA= 3gm at bedtime with warm water =vata pacifying, gentle laxative, relieves gas and bloating

3) ABHAYARISHTA= 30 ml with equal water twice daily after meals =best for chronic constipation, piles , anal fissure and gas

4) AVIPATIKAR CHURNA(if acidity)= 5gm with water before meals = reduces pitta, heylpsbowel movement

STRONGER LAXATIVES( IF SEVERE CONSTIPATION)

1) GANDHARVAHASTADI KASHAYA= 15ml with warm water twice daily before meals =clears vata from the colon, use for dry constipation

2) ERANDA TAILA= 5-10 ml with warm milk at bedtime once weekly =strong purgatives, lubricates colon, heals fissure

ENEMA(basti therapy- for chronic case) -sneha basti- lubricates cold, soothes nerves, best for vata - Niruha basti- cleanses colon, resets vata balance

DIET RECOMMENDATIONS the goal is to moisten the intestines, balance vata, and ensure soft, regular stools

FRUITS= ripe banana, papaya, figs(soaked), prunes, soaked raisins, stewed apples- natural laxatives, fibre rich

VEGETABLES= bottle gourd, pumpkin, spinach, carrots, beetroot(cooked)- easy to digest, promotes bowel movement

GRAINS= rice, oats, wheat, barley- light, nourishing grains

FATS= cows ghee(1-2 tsp/day), sesame oil- lubricates intestines, pacifies vata

LIQUID= warm water, soups, thin moong dal, herbal teas- keeps digestion smooth, hydrates colon

SPICES= hing, ajwain, cumin, fennel, ginger- improves digestion, reduces gas and bloating.

FOOD TO AVOID

DRY FOODS= crackers, chips, popcorn

COLD OR RAW FOOD= salads, refrigerated drinks

HEAVY AND CONSTIPATING= cheese, red meat, fried foods, too much panner

REFINED AND PROCESSED= maida, white bread, pastries

SPICY OR ACIDIC= chillies, pickles, citrus in exces

-Avoid sitting long on the toilet -never suppress the urge to defecate - avoid long sitting hours-take short walks or breaks -manage stress- if directly impacts your bowel via the gut-brain axis

YOGA FOR YOUR CASE -practice daily, on an empty stomach ,preferably in the morning

pawanmuktasana- stimulates intestines, releievs gas Vajrasana= aids digestion if done after meals Malasana= opens pelvis, supports bowel movement Bhujangasana= strengthens abdominal organs Dhanurasana= massages abdominal organs

PRANAYAM -anulom vilom bhramari. sheetali

DAILY HABITS -Warm water+ghee in the morning -soaoked figs or raisins before breakfast -yoga and breathing in morning

DO FOLLOW

HOPE THIS MIGHT BE HELPFUL

THANK YOU

Hello Aaron,

I can understand your concern about chronic constipation but dont worry we are here to help you out😊

✅ Why This Is Happening

👉Overuse of stimulant laxatives (Dulcolax, Docusate) weakens the natural bowel reflex.

👉Antibiotics and catheterization disturb gut flora and intestinal tone.

👉Excess Vata dosha in the colon leads to dryness and hard stools.

👉Magnesium oxide gives temporary relief but doesn’t correct the root cause — colon dryness and atony.

✅AYURVEDIC PLAN OF TREATMENT

✅ Gentle Ayurvedic Stool Softeners (Non-Stimulant, Non-Habit Forming):

1. Triphala Churna – continue, but modify timing and dosage:

Take 1 tsp of Triphala churna soaked in warm water overnight, and drink that water in the morning.

If you are taking tablet take 2 tablet in night at bed time

2. Gandharvahastadi Taila – 1–2 tsp with warm milk before bedtime, once or twice a week. Acts as a snigdha virechaka (unctuous mild laxative) without depleting strength.

3. Avipattikar Churna –

Especially helpful if acidity, bloating, or burning sensation co-exists. Take 1 tsp with warm water after lunch and dinner.

4. Isabgol (Psyllium husk) –

Add 1–2 tsp in a glass of warm water or milk before bedtime. It acts as a stool bulking and softening agent (safe for long-term use).

✅Gut Restorative and Strengthening Remedies

Takra (buttermilk) therapy: Daily mid-day drink of buttermilk with roasted cumin and a pinch of rock salt — balances gut flora after antibiotic use.

👉Hingvastak Churna: Take ½ tsp with warm water before meals to reduce gas and improve digestion.

👉Aloe vera pulp (Kumari) – 2 tbsp in the morning empty stomach helps bowel lubrication.

✅Lifestyle and Diet Support

-Drink warm water frequently — cold water increases Vata dryness.

Include ghee (1–2 tsp/day) in meals — natural stool softener.

Eat ripe papaya, soaked raisins, figs, cooked apples, and green moong soup.

Avoid dry, cold, and processed foods.

Gentle yoga Pawanmuktasana, Bhujangasana, Vajrasana after meals.

If constipation has persisted for more than 2 months despite good diet, you may also consider a short course of Panchakarma therapy — Mridu Virechana (mild purgation) or Matra Basti (oil enema with sesame oil).

This rejuvenates the colon, restores Apana Vata, and helps you stop dependency on magnesium oxide completely.

For daily use, Triphala + Isabgol + Ghee + Buttermilk form a safe and effective long-term combination.

Wishing you a good health😊

Warm Regards Dr Snehal Vidhate

In your situation, Ayurveda might offer some gentle and effective options. Since you’re already taking triphala without satisfying results, you may consider incorporating certain Ayurvedic practices aimed at promoting regular, soft bowel movements.

Triphala’s effectiveness can be enhanced by taking it with warm water or adding a bit of honey if your constitution permits—ideally, before bed. If tablets aren’t working, the powdered form can sometimes be more effective when taken with warm water, about half to one teaspoon.

Another remedy you might find beneficial is psyllium husk, also known as isabgol. It’s not a stimulant and works more as a bulk-forming laxative — helping to draw water into the bowel, thus softening the stool. You could start with one teaspoon in a glass of warm water, taken once in the evening.

A combination of herbs called Avipattikar churna could also be considered. Known for its ability to balance pitta and regulate digestion, it can be a supportive addition. Take about half a teaspoon in warm water or milk before bed but confirm with an Ayurvedic practitioner if it suits your dosha balance and condition.

Diet-wise, ensure to include ghee in your diet which helps lubricate the intestines. A spoonful of ghee before bed, preferably with warm milk, might be helpful. Avoiding cold and heavy foods at night, focusing more on warm, cooked meals is essential too.

Additionally, consider daily abhyanga (self-massage) with warm sesame oil, focusing on the abdominal region in a clockwise direction which can improve peristalsis. Keep practicing yoga poses like Pavanamuktasana (wind-relieving pose) and Baddha Konasana (bound angle pose) to assist bowel movements by gently stimulating internal organs.

While these measures can be supportive, it’s essential to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to ensure they’re suitable for your specific health conditions and doshic balance.

When dealing with chronic constipation, especially after a history of antibiotics and laxatives, it’s important to reset the balance in your system. In Ayurvedic terms, constipation often relates to Vata dosha imbalance and requires gentle, consistent correction. Since you’ve been taking Triphala without much effect, it might be that other aspects of your lifestyle would benefit from adjustment alongside another Ayurvedic approach.

Start with considering Castor Oil (Ricinus communis) internally, as it’s one of the chief natural laxatives in Ayurvedic medicine. Taking 1-2 teaspoons of cold-pressed castor oil at bedtime could help soften the stool due to its natural purgative properties. However, since it’s fairly strong, start with a smaller dose to gauge its impact on your system.

Aside from supplements, integrate certain dietary and lifestyle changes. Cook food well with sufficient natural oils like sesame or ghee. This not only aids in digestion for high-fiber foods but also helps in lubricating the intestines. Warm drinks suffice; include herbal teas infusing ajwain or cumin seeds.

Practicing Abhyanga, self-massage with oil, especially in the abdomen area, can be a supportive routine to calm the Vata and enhance bowel regularity. Doing a 10-15 minute massage before a warm bath or shower can be revitalizing to the digestive fire, agni.

As you explore these suggestions, observe your body’s response over a few weeks—it takes time for dietary changes and natural remedies to rebalance the system. However, if symptoms persist, or worsen, please ensure to follow up with a healthcare professional without delay.
