How to reduce head pressure and pain in neck area when sleeping at night - #22657

Yogita Reddy

Good day, I have recently been put on high bp meds for the past month, I'm a 52 year old female. I am experiencing more severe headaches after meds, especially at night when going to sleep and waking in the morning. Have lots of head pressure building up even after trying several sleeping positions. ENT thinks there might be signs of dysfunctional eustachian tube recently with ear pain, ear pressure, neck pain, blocked ears on and off.

For your symptoms, let’s dive into some Ayurvedic insights that might help. From an Ayurvedic perspective, your condition could be linked to a vitiation of Vata and Pitta doshas—often influencing stress levels and circulatory issues. The feeling of pressure in your head and neck could be a manifestation of Vata imbalance, while the headaches and ear conditions resonate with Pitta.

Firstly, consider dietary adjustments. Avoid overly spicy, sour, and salty foods that can aggravate Pitta, including processed meats, spicy sauces, and citrus fruits. Embrace more cooling foods like cucumber, grapes, and leafy greens. Incorporate herbs like brahmi or gotu kola, known for calming Vata and supporting mental clarity; a simple tea infusion often works.

When it comes to lifestyle, establishing a calm bedtime routine can ease Vata disturbances. Taking time for a gentle self-massage with warm sesame oil before bed could help; it’s grounding and soothing. Pay attention to calming, deep breathing exercises or light meditation for about 10-15 minutes each evening—these will help regulate Vata and bring down internal chaos.

Nasya therapy could be beneficial as well. Using a few drops of Anu oil daily in each nostril might help alleviate some of your symptoms, but always consult with your healthcare provider before adding any new treatments, especially considering your high bp condition.

Lastly, ensure your neck and head are adequately supported during sleep — possibly using a neck pillow. Its important to have your head slightly elevated to avoid excess pressure buildup. Continuous discomfort may warrant a review of your blood-pressure medication with your physician, to ensure there’s no link between the treatment and your persistent symptoms.

Make these steps a part of your daily routine, and monitor how you feel. But remember, if the pressure or headaches become too intense, it would be crucial to follow up with your ENT or primary healthcare provider.
