can we eat amla during periods - #25005

David

I am really confused about something and hope someone here can help. Recently, I’ve been trying to eat healthier and include more Ayurvedic foods in my diet, especially now that I'm getting my periods. A friend told me that amla is super good for you, but I keep hearing mixed things about whether we can eat amla during periods. Last month, I had the worst cramps and bloating, and I really focused on what I was eating. I avoided certain foods but I didn’t know how to incorporate things like amla. I’ve read that amla can help with digestion and boosts immunity, which sounds great, but does that change when you're on your period? Like, does it help or could it actually make things worse? I thought about sipping amla juice but then again, I’m worried it might cause more discomfort. My cycles are irregular, and sometimes I feel really fatigued. If someone could clarify if can we eat amla during periods or share personal experiences that would be awesome! Thanks!

Eating amla, or Indian gooseberry, during periods generally is safe and can be beneficial due to its high vitamin C content and its Ayurvedic properties. However, there are a few considerations to keep in mind. Amla is known for enhancing digestion and boosting immunity, and it’s particularly prakriti-neutral, which means it doesn’t exacerbate any dosha imbalance on its own. During periods, one might experience a heightened Vata imbalance leading to cramps and bloating. As amla has a sour taste, which can generally pacify Vata, it could be helpful.

If you’re dealing with cramps and bloating, a balanced diet plays a huge role. Amla juice is often an easy way to incorporate amla into your diet during periods, but it’s crucial to consume it in moderation. Aim for fresh amla juice, as packaged versions often contain added preservatives or sugars, which might not be ideal during periods.

When taking amla, be aware that in some cases, the sour taste might cause mild irritation or acidity, another consideration if your digestive fire (Agni) is weak or you have a history of acidity issues. If you’re drinking amla juice and find it’s making you feel uncomfortable, like causing extra bloating or discomfort, observe the portion size and maybe accompany it with a meal.

For fatigue and irregular cycles, apart from amla, include iron-rich foods like cooked spinach, beetroot, and pomegranate to help bolster your energy levels and nourish your tissues. Also, staying hydrated is essential. Sipping warm water throughout the day might help with bloating and digestion.

Balancing your meals with warming spices like ginger or cumin could support smooth digestion and provide relief from period discomforts. Trying yoga or light exercises such as walking might also alleviate cramps and improve mood.

If symptoms persist or worsen in significant manner, consulting an Ayurvedic physician or general practitioner for personalized guidance is a wise choice, ensuring you’re on the right path with your nutrition and overall health approach.
