can oil pulling reverse cavity - #25328

Charles

I am trying to figure out if oil pulling can really reverse cavities. Been reading a lot online and some people swear by it. A while ago, I went for a checkup and was told I had a small cavity starting on one of my molars. Just a bummer, right? I didn’t want to get a filling if I could avoid it. That’s when I got into this whole oil pulling thing. I’ve been doing it almost every morning with coconut oil for about a month now. It’s kinda nice, but I’m also worried that I’m just wasting my time. My mouth feels fresh, but I can't tell if it’s helping at all. I read some articles that say oil pulling can reverse cavities, but is that really true? Like, does it actually do something structural to the enamel? And how long does it take to see any effects in the mouth if oil pulling can reverse cavity issues? Really just looking for some honest opinions and advice 'cause I’m not sure what to think anymore.

The concept of oil pulling is indeed rooted in Ayurvedic practices and is known for promoting oral health. However, it’s important to manage expectations when it comes to reversing cavities. Oil pulling, especially with coconut oil, can help to reduce harmful bacteria in the mouth, which may prevent the progression of cavities in some cases. Yet, it is not typically considered capable of reversing cavities, particularly those that have progressed beyond the very early stages.

Cavities occur due to demineralization of the tooth enamel, and once a cavity forms, it usually requires professional dental treatment. While oil pulling can contribute to improved oral hygiene and potentially slow down the progression of a cavity, it cannot structurally restore tooth enamel once decay has occurred.

In terms of timing, oil pulling is usually recommended as a daily practice and could take several weeks or even months to see noticeable improvement in overall oral hygiene, although this won’t necessarily reverse cavities. For comprehensive oral care, you’ll want to maintain good dental hygiene practices, such as brushing and flossing daily, using fluoride toothpaste, and having regular dental checkups to monitor cavities.

If you’re reluctant to get a filling, talk with your dentist about your concerns. In some cases, early-stage cavities (often termed as incipient caries) may be remineralized with professional treatments or fluoride applications. Ensure you’re also considering your doshic balance, as stress and diet can affect oral health. Avoid excess sweets and acidic foods that may exacerbate decay.

Remember, while Ayurveda offers wonderful supportive practices, combining it with regular dental advice is your best route for optimal oral health. If your cavity worsens, seeking a dentist for the appropriate treatment is very important.

Thanks so much for clarifying this! I had no idea mixing meds could be risky. I'll stick to my doctor's meds and look into Ayurveda separately.
