what is night blindness how can it be cured - #36712

Audrey

I am struggling a bit with my vision lately, especially at night. Like, I bump into things because I can't see well in low light. I heard that this might be connected to "what is night blindness?" but I'm not sure if that's the right term for what’s happenning to me. My friends joke about it, saying I need night vision goggles or something, but honestly, it’s kinda scary. I went to an eye doctor, and they said it's not serious or anything, but it does feel serious to me, y'know? They mentioned something about vitamin A deficiency or how some other health issues might cause it. Now I can’t stop wondering, what is night blindness really though? I googled some stuff, but it seems pretty broad – like, could it be caused by my diet? I used to eat well, but since work got crazy, I'm just grabbing snacks instead of proper meals. Also, I want to know how can it be cured? Are there specific Ayurvedic remedies? I heard there are herbs that might help! Maybe a change in diet or lifestyle could make a difference? I’m kinda lost here, and really want some solutions. If anyone has experienced "what is night blindness?" or knows how can it be cured, I'd appreciate your insights. Thanks!

Night blindness, known as Nyctalopia in Western medicine, is a condition where one’s ability to see in low light or darkness is impaired. In Ayurveda, it is understood through the lens of dosha imbalances, most notably Kapha and Pitta, affecting the eye’s functions, potentially stemming from deficiencies or lifestyle influences.

Vitamin A deficiency is one common cause, as Vitamin A is crucial for maintaining healthy vision. Modern lifestyles and dietary changes can often lead to such deficiencies, particularly if meals are swapped for calorie-dense snacks lacking essential nutrients.

Addressing night blindness through Ayurveda involves dietary and lifestyle adjustments tailored to balancing the doshas, enhancing the visual faculties and fulfilling nutritional gaps. First, enriching the diet with foods high in Vitamin A can be beneficial. This includes carrots, sweet potatoes, spinach, and kale – rich in beta-carotene which the body converts to Vitamin A.

Incorporating Triphala, a renowned Ayurvedic formulation, could aid in improving eye health. This is typically taken as a churna (powder) and consumed with warm water before bed. Whether holistic or not, ensure that your digestion (agni) is strong enough for absorption and assimilation of these nutrients – nourishing your dhatus, especially the Rasa and Rakta.

Additionally, practicing eye exercises might enhance eye muskcles’ strength and flexibility. For instance, gently rotating eyes in circles, up and down, sideways, and focusing on near-far objects regularly can enhance flexibility. Rest your eyes frequently if you’re staring at screens for extended periods.

Adequate rest and stress management also play a pivotal role. Regular sleep patterns ensure that the Pitta dosha is in balance and the nervous system is at ease, contributing to overall vision health. Engage in calming activities like yoga or meditation which fosters internal balance.

Yet, if dietary and lifestyle modifications don’t alleviate the condition or symptoms persist, do seek professional medical advice. Night blindness might, though rarely, be a signal of a more significant underlying condition needing attention.
