Improving eyesight naturally involves a focus on balancing your doshas and supporting ocular health through diet, lifestyle, and exercises. In Ayurveda, poor vision is often attributed to excess Pitta dosha, especially when combined with stress and strain causing excess heat in the eyes. To start, maintaining a regular daily routine, or dinacharya, aligned with your natural constitution can significantly help.
Begin with dietary changes. Foods rich in vitamins A, C, and E are crucial. Include green leafy vegetables like spinach and kale, as well as carrots and sweet potatoes, ones packed with beta-carotene, a vitamin A precursor. Consuming citrus fruits such as oranges can provide an ample supply of vitamin C. Nuts and seeds such as almonds and sunflower seeds contribute with vitamin E – these strengthen eye muscles and protect against oxidative damage.
Incorporate specific Ayurvedic herbs like Triphala, which promotes eye health. A daily practice of washing eyes with Triphala water can be soothing. Soak half a teaspoon of Triphala powder in water overnight, and strain it in the morning. Use this to gently cleanse your eyes.
Practicing Trataka, a yogic eye exercise, can improve your eyesight and concentration. Lit a candle, and gaze at its flame without blinking for as long as possible. When tears appear, close your eyes and focus on the afterimage. This helps in strengthening the eye muscles.
Ensure ample rest to your eyes from screens, taking breaks every 20 minutes. Adequate sleep is vital in reducing strain. Consider applying cool cucumber slices or cotton soaked in rose water on closed eyes – it is refreshing and reduces Pitta.
If you have severe vision problems, seek immediate professional help. While these practices can support vision health, they are not substitutes for medical treatment in acute cases or emergencies. Ensuring regular check-ups with an optometrist is necessary to keep track of your ocular health effectively.
