The persistent dry cough your son is experiencing, paired with throat irritation and waking up with thirst, may be linked to an imbalance in his vata dosha, as per Ayurvedic understanding. It sounds like his body is exhibiting signs of excessive dryness internally. Since he’s not a mouth breather and doesn’t snore, let’s focus on dietary and lifestyle changes to balance this condition.
Firstly, focus on increasing warm, moist foods in his diet to help counteract the dryness. Warm cooked meals like soups, stews, and porridges, particularly those that include ginger and turmeric, can be beneficial. These ingredients are known for their anti-inflammatory properties and ability to soothe the throat. Avoid cold, raw foods and drinks, which can aggravate the dryness further.
Since you have already stopped milk, make sure he has enough calcium and vitamin D from other sources like leafy greens, almonds, and fortified cereals. You could try substituting milk with warm almond milk or oat milk with a pinch of turmeric at bedtime, which can be calming.
Encourage him to sip on warm water throughout the day, perhaps infused with a little honey and lemon, to keep the throat moistened and prevent irritation. It’s suggested to avoid very spicy or fried foods that might exacerbate dryness.
Incorporate Breathing exercises, his routine. Deep, controlled breathing can assist in clearing any lingering sensations of throat irritation. Pranayama when done early morning in fresh air, can also help.
Applying a little sesame oil on the soles of his feet before bed may balance vata, promoting relaxation and encouraging sound sleep.
If these suggestions don’t lead to an improvement in a couple weeks; then it might be wise to consult a professional for a more comprehensive examination. The cough’s persistence for 2-3 months definitely needs further exploration, so consider seeing a pediatrician or ENT specialist to ensure no underlying issues need attention.
