Persistent acne, especially at 18, can be quite frustrating. Let’s explore an Ayurvedic approach to tackle its root causes. Acne is often linked to an imbalance in Pitta dosha, which controls heat and metabolism in the body. When Pitta is excessive, it can show up on the skin as acne, inflammation, and redness.
First, let’s talk about diet. It’s important to cut down on foods that increase Pitta, like spicy, oily, fried foods, and caffeinated drinks. Instead, go for cool, hydrating foods like cucumbers, leafy greens, and sweet fruits like pears and melons. Adding herbs like coriander and mint to your meals can help balance Pitta due to their cooling properties. Drink plenty of water to help detoxify your body - aim for about 8 glasses a day, sipped slowly throughout the day.
Next, consider using herbs that calm Pitta. Neem, known for its anti-inflammatory properties, can be taken internally, 1-2 tablets of neem extract daily. Alternatively, you can make a decoction by boiling 10-15 neem leaves in water until it’s reduced by half and consume it daily. Turmeric is also beneficial; add a pinch of turmeric to a glass of warm milk and drink it daily. Remember to consult a healthcare provider to ensure you’re taking the right dosages.
Topical treatments can also help. Use a paste of sandalwood powder and rose water on the affected areas. Let it dry, and rinse with cool water. The cooling nature of sandalwood can soothe inflamed skin. Neem oil can be applied sparingly onto the affected areas for its antimicrobial benefits.
In terms of lifestyle, establish a routine that allows for adequate rest and relaxation. Stress can worsen Pitta, so practices like meditation or yoga can be very helpful. Try to get at least 7-8 hours of sleep each night, as restorative sleep helps the skin and body heal.
Lastly, pay attention to your skincare routine, keeping it simple. Over-cleansing and excessive use of chemical-laden products can make the issue worse. Opt for gentle, natural skincare that doesn’t strip the skin’s natural oils. Acne can sometimes be persistent, so maintaining consistency in these practices is key to seeing the best results. Always consult a dermatologist if any condition worsens.
