Does Ayurvedic medicine affect the liver? - #17689

im actually really worried rn about trying out ayurveda. my aunt has been suggesting Ayurvedic medicines for a while now cuz i keep getting sick alot (cold, flu etc) but i saw something online that made me nervous. basically, someone posted that ayurvedic herbs or supplements can mess with ur liver, so now i wanna know the truth clearly. Does Ayurvedic medicine affect the liver? to give a bit of context, i've had liver issues in the past—like 3 yrs ago my liver enzymes were high during a routine blood test. the doc said it was probably because of some medication i took (i was taking flibanserin tablet at the time), and he told me to just stop it and things got better. my enzyme levels went back to normal after few months. i havent had probs with the liver since then, tests in march last yr came back clear. recently tho, my immunity has been really weak and ive had like 3 colds just this winter. im sick of antibiotics cuz they mess up my digestion, thats why i finally agreed to listen to my aunt about Ayurveda. but the problem is, when i googled about ayurvedic supplements i saw a few scary stories abt liver problems related to them. one person said some Ayurvedic herbs increased their liver enzymes super high. another article said heavy metals can be in Ayurvedic meds which can harm the liver. honestly, im totally confused rn and dunno who to trust🙄. my aunt swears by ayurveda and said she never had any issues, but she doesn't have past liver problems like me, so maybe it affects ppl differently? so im just trying to be careful. Does Ayurvedic medicine affect the liver? should i get like tests done before starting Ayurveda treatment to make sure its safe? is there something specific i shld avoid or look for when buying Ayurvedic products so they dont harm my liver? honestly, my main worry is just to avoid any risk for liver cuz ive had bad experiences before. i really wanna try Ayurveda for immunity cuz antibiotics are literally ruining my digestion. but this liver issue thing has me hesitating alot. i just want some clear answers abt Does Ayurvedic medicine affect the liver?, specially for someone like me who already had issues before. can i safely use Ayurveda without damaging my liver again? what kinda herbs or ingredients are totally safe for liver?? pls help me out cuz im genuinely stressed out abt this. thx alot.

I completely understand your concerns, especially with your history of liver issues. Ayurveda, when used correctly, is generally safe, but like any medicine, there are important precautions to take—especially for someone with a history of liver problems.

Some Ayurvedic herbs and supplements, if not sourced or used properly, can potentially cause liver issues, particularly if they contain heavy metals (which can occur due to poor-quality manufacturing or improper preparation) or certain potent herbs that might be taxing on the liver, like Kalonji, Kanchanar, or high doses of Bhringaraj. It’s essential to buy Ayurvedic products from trusted, reputable sources that test their products for safety and quality. Additionally, Ayurvedic practitioners should be consulted to tailor a regimen specific to your health needs, ensuring that the herbs used are safe for your liver and overall condition.

Given your history, it would be wise to consult with a qualified Ayurvedic doctor who can guide you on the right herbs for boosting immunity without stressing your liver. It’s also a good idea to have regular liver function tests before starting any new treatment to monitor your health closely. For immunity support in Ayurveda, herbs like Ashwagandha, Tulsi (Holy Basil), and Amla (Indian Gooseberry) are often used, and they are generally considered safe and gentle on the liver. But, as always, make sure to get personalized advice from a professional to ensure everything is suited to your unique health profile.

In summary, Ayurvedic medicine doesn’t inherently harm the liver if used properly, but it’s important to be cautious, especially if you have a history of liver issues. Always choose high-quality products and consult an experienced Ayurvedic practitioner to minimize any risks.

Namaste, I understand your concerns and completely respect how careful you’re being—especially with your previous liver issues. It’s good that you’re doing your research before diving into something new. Let’s break this down and address your worries from an Ayurvedic perspective, with a personal touch, so you can make an informed choice.

Firstly, Ayurveda is a holistic healing system that focuses on balance and individual constitution, so it can be deeply beneficial for your immunity and overall health. However, like any form of treatment, the key lies in choosing the right herbs and formulations that suit your body type and health history. It’s important to remember that not all Ayurvedic herbs are the same, and they must be taken in the proper context. Some herbs can indeed have a potent effect on the liver, but Ayurveda also offers many gentle, liver-supporting herbs that work in harmony with your body, especially if you’ve had liver issues before.

For your specific concern, there are certain Ayurvedic herbs that are known for their liver-supportive properties, such as Bhringraj and Kutki, which help detoxify and rejuvenate the liver without causing harm. These herbs are commonly used to enhance digestion and immune function without overburdening the liver. Another powerful herb in Ayurveda for liver health is Guduchi (Giloy)—a well-known immunity booster that also supports liver function by strengthening its detoxifying abilities. However, it’s important to be mindful of the quality and purity of the herbs you choose, as some Ayurvedic products may contain heavy metals or adulterants if not sourced from reliable, trusted manufacturers.

Your concerns about heavy metals are not unfounded—contaminated Ayurvedic supplements can indeed pose risks, especially if the source is not regulated or the herbs are not prepared properly. Good-quality, authentic Ayurvedic medicines should ideally come from well-established brands that follow good manufacturing practices and have undergone rigorous quality checks for safety. To avoid this risk, it’s always best to consult a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner who can guide you in selecting the right herbs and products tailored for your body. You can also ask them about specific brands that are known for their high-quality, safe formulations.

In your case, because of your previous liver issues, it would be wise to take extra precautions. Yes, I recommend getting a liver function test before starting any Ayurvedic treatment. That way, you’ll have a clear baseline of your liver health, and you can ensure that the treatment won’t be taxing on your liver. If you are starting Ayurvedic herbs, I would suggest using milder, liver-friendly options, and sticking to low doses at first to see how your body reacts. Regular follow-up tests would also be a good idea to ensure your liver function stays stable.

As far as lifestyle changes go, Ayurveda suggests boosting your agni (digestive fire) and supporting your immune system naturally through proper food and habits. Avoid heavy, greasy, or overly spicy foods that may further disturb your digestion and lead to sluggishness, which could impact your immunity. Incorporating more fiber, hydrating foods, and warm herbal teas like ginger and turmeric can support your immunity and digestion without stressing your liver.

To summarize, Ayurvedic medicine can be safe for your liver if chosen and used correctly. The key is to ensure you are using herbs that are gentle, nourishing, and supportive, while avoiding any formulations that might be improperly prepared or contaminated. Always seek guidance from a trained Ayurvedic professional who can help you find the best products and doses suited to your health history. With the right approach, Ayurveda can offer great support to your immunity and overall wellness without compromising your liver health.

I hope this helps ease your concerns and guides you towards a safe and effective Ayurvedic approach. If you need further help with specific herbs or treatments, feel free to reach out!

It is completely understandable to be cautious about Ayurvedic medicine, especially with your history of liver enzyme issues. Ayurveda itself does not harm the liver when used correctly, but the quality of the products and how they are used matter. Some concerns about liver damage arise when people take low-quality, contaminated supplements or strong detoxifying herbs without proper guidance.

Since your liver enzymes were elevated in the past due to medication but later normalized, there is no reason Ayurveda would automatically be harmful. However, it is important to choose herbs that are safe for liver health. Amla, Guduchi, and Turmeric are well-known in Ayurveda for supporting both immunity and liver function. Triphala is another gentle option that helps digestion without putting stress on the liver.

To avoid any risk, always buy Ayurvedic medicines from reputable, certified brands and avoid heavy-metal-containing formulations unless prescribed by a qualified practitioner. It may also be helpful to take a liver function test before starting and monitor any changes. If you are still unsure, starting with natural food-based Ayurvedic remedies like herbal teas, warm water with turmeric, or fresh Amla juice is a safe way to strengthen immunity without concerns about liver health.

Ayurveda focuses on balancing the body rather than just treating symptoms, so when approached correctly, it can help improve immunity without harming the liver.
