Ulcerative colitis flares can be quite challenging, but incorporating Ayurveda, alongside your current medication, may help manage symptoms. During a flare-up, the focus is on cooling inflammation and enhancing the digestion. In Ayurveda, this condition can often be associated with an imbalance in the Pitta dosha, so the goal is to calm excess Pitta. First, nutrition plays a central role. Opt for a Pitta-soothing diet, which includes cooling, stable and grounding foods. Avoid spicy, oily, and hot foods as they can aggravate Pitta. Instead, reach for things like cooked vegetables, white rice, and easily digestible grains like quinoa or oats. A pinch of fennel or cumin powder sprinkled over meals may aid digestion and help in cooling the body’s system as well. Drink coconut water or buttermilk, they are cooling and soothing to the digestive tract. Herbal remedies can complement dietary changes. Aloe vera juice, when taken early morning on an empty stomach, is known for its cooling properties, make sure its fresh and free of added sugars. Triphala, a well-known Ayurvedic formulation, can support bowel health; just take it in hot water during the day. Lifestyle tweaks are also key. Stress aggravates symptoms, so try incorporating relaxation practices like yoga, pranayama (breathing exercises), or meditation into daily routine. Bhramari or Shitali Pranayama can specifically help in calming the Pitta dosha. Adequate sleep, especially by maintaining routine sleep schedules, can also support healing and reduce the overall stress on the body. Moreover, keeping it simple is crucial. Engage in light, gentle exercises like walking or stretching, nothing too intense which can increase Pitta. If naturally feasible, consider Abhyanga (self oil massage) with cooling oils like coconut or olive oil — it can help calm the nervous system and ground your energy levels. However, during a severe flare-up, it's essential to consult with healthcare professional and continue medications as suggested by your doctor. In Ayurveda, it's about complementing the existing regimen, not replacing it. When symptoms are acute, immediate medical intervention is crucial, don't overlook ,that.
