can we eat ghee and fish together - #25691

Sebastian

I am really confused about my diet lately. I’ve been trying to eat healthier and include more Ayurvedic principles, but I’m stuck on this one thing. A friend mentioned that we can eat ghee and fish together, but I just feel uncertain about it. Last week, I made a delicious fish curry using ghee (which I love by the way) and I felt bad later on, like maybe I shouldn’t have mixed them? I’ve read mixed views online about ghee and fish – some say they go great together while others insist it’s a total no-no. My digestion hasn’t been the best recently, like sometimes I deal with bloating after meals. I don’t know if that’s from the fish or the ghee, or both. I tried a separate meal with just ghee and vegetables and felt pretty good, but then I’m wondering: can we eat ghee and fish together without causing digestive issues? I really wanna enjoy my meals without guilt!

Combining ghee and fish actually brings up an interesting topic in Ayurveda. While both these foods are nutritious, Ayurveda traditionally advises against mixing certain foods due to their potential for causing digestive disturbances. Ghee is highly valued in Ayurvedic cooking for its sattvic nature, which means it's considered pure and beneficial for the body, aiding in digestion when used correctly. Fish, however, is often categorized as tamasic when paired with ghee - which can slow down digestion and potentially lead to digestive discomforts. One of the main reasons behind these guidelines is that ghee is heavy and cooling, whereas fish is considered heating. The combination of cold and heat in digestion may create confusion in the digestive process, leading to issues such as bloating or discomfort. Your discomfort after consuming fish curry with ghee could be attributed to this imbalance. If you've experienced bloating after meals, it could be an indication that your agni, or digestive fire, needs nurturing. When eating heavier foods, try using lemon juice or a dash of rock salt to stimulate digestion, possibly with warming spices like cumin or ginger before you eat fish. Considering your positive experience with ghee and vegetables, it's smart to keep your meals lighter and more aligned with your body's current state. Reinforce your digestive fire by favoring lighter meals and incorporating spices like black pepper, cumin, or fennel to prevent any bloating or gas. As for enjoying meals guilt-free, it's always a good idea to listen to your body's responses to food. Ayurveda emphasizes personalized nutrition, so if a meal does cause discomfort once, it's worth reconsiderating the combination or portion size. Also, focus on mindful eating - avoid multi-tasking while eating, chew thoroughly, and savor the food's taste and texture. If your digestion continues to be troublesome, consider seeking guidance from a qualified Ayurvedic practitioner to provide personalized advice aligning with your doshic balance.
