is it necessary to tie stomach after delivery - #25753

Aubrey

I am really confused about something that’s been bugging me ever since I gave birth a month ago. My mom keeps insisting that is it necessary to tie stomach after delivery, but I’ve heard mixed things from friends and online. I thought maybe you all could share some wisdom? I had a normal delivery, but my belly feels so loose and just... not like normal. I mean, I kinda get where my mom is coming from, like she swears it helps in getting back in shape faster and all, but how true is that? When I tried to tie it up for a bit, honestly, it was super uncomfortable and felt sort of constricting. I don’t want to hurt my recovery or anything. Plus, I’ve been trying to eat healthy and do some light walking but baby is so demanding, it’s hard to find time! So really, is it necessary to tie stomach after delivery? Or is it all just an old wives’ tale? Would love to hear what others have experienced!

Tying the stomach, or abdominal binding, after delivery is a practice with roots in many traditional medical systems, including Ayurveda. It's often believed to help support the abdominal muscles and promote faster healing by providing gentle compression that aids in uterus returning to its normal size and position. However, it’s not strictly necessary and should always be balanced against your comfort and health needs. From an Ayurvedic standpoint, this practice may help in balancing Vata dosha, which tends to become aggravated after childbirth. Vata dominance can lead to feelings of lightness, instability and coldness – and gentle warmth and stability from a belly bind can counter those effects. But this doesn't mean it’s indispensable for everyone. It's always crucial to listen to your own body. If you decide to use a belly wrap, it should feel supportive but not tight or restrictive. Too much compression can impede circulation or interfere with natural postpartum healing processes. You might try using a soft, breathable cotton cloth rather than an elastic wrap, wrapping lightly around the middle. Any discomfort or pain indicates it might not be suiting you. Additionally, ensure that your diet and lifestyle are supportive of postnatal recovery. Focus on warm, easily digestible foods; think of light stews, kitchari, and herbal teas to strengthen Agni (digestion) and to nourish the body. Turmeric milk or ginger tea can be soothing. Since time is constricted with a baby to care for, short, gentle walks are fine but don't stress if you can't do it every day. Rest is just as crucial. All in all, while binding can have its benefits, it's certainly not a necessity. More essential is ensuring you're comfortable and your health is prioritized. Always consider consulting with a health professional or Ayurvedic expert to tailor a regimen that fits your unique needs.
