Ayurveda treatment for enlarged prostate - #26532

"Ayurvedic approach for Pitta constitution with prostate health concerns - Age 80" "I am an 80-year-old male with primarily Pitta constitution (need 9 hours sleep, energy sensitive to sleep loss, prefer cooler weather, good digestion). I experience frequent nighttime urination (3-4 times) due to enlarged prostate, which disrupts my sleep. I prefer natural approaches and don't take any medications. Please advise: 1. Pitta-balancing herbs/drinks that also support prostate health suitable for my age 2. Dietary recommendations specific to my constitution and concern at 80 years 3. Gentle lifestyle practices that could help both issues 4. Any specific timing for remedies (morning/evening) 5. Age-appropriate dosages and precautions I'm particularly interested in herbal formulations I can prepare at home or source in India."

For managing prostate health with a focus on balancing Pitta dosha, integrating specific herbs and lifestyle practices can be beneficial. Given your Pitta constitution and age, preserving coolness and tranquility is key.

1. Pitta-Balancing Herbs: Shatavari and Amalaki are excellent choices. Shatavari, in particular, is cooling and nourishing, supporting prostate health. You might prepare a concoction with half a teaspoon of shatavari powder mixed in warm milk, taking this in the morning. For Amalaki, it can be taken in powdered form, about 1/4 teaspoon, with water, complements your morning or evening routine. Another herb, Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata), is traditionally supportive for prostate issues - using Kachnar in the form of cotyledon decoction could be included in the evening.

2. Dietary Recommendations: Focus on cooling, light and hydrating meals. Leafy greens such as spinach or kale are suitable. You can include barley, as it is known to reduce Pitta and is also diuretic, helping manage frequent urination. Avoid spicy, sour and salty foods, which aggravates Pitta. Integrate fruits like watermelon and cucumber for their cooling properties.

3. Gentle Lifestyle Practices: Practice cooling pranayamas like Sheetali and Sheetkari for cooling the system. Yoga postures such as Supta Baddha Konasana (Reclining Bound Angle Pose) and Viparita Karani (Legs-Up-The-Wall Pose) before going to bed can promote restful sleep and support urinary health.

4. Timing for Remedies: Morning is ideal for most of these remedies when Agni (digestive fire) is stable. Evening relaxation practices, like a gentle walk in nature, are beneficial.

5. Dosages and Precautions: Start with smaller doses, particularly given your age - 250 mg to 500 mg for herbs like Shatavari and Amalaki. Always observe how your body reacts, as individual tolerance can vary widely. Also, sourced quality herbs from reputable suppliers ensure that you’re not getting contaminated products.

Monitoring your condition and adjusting accordingly is critical. Should symptoms persist or worsen, consulting a healthcare professional becomes necessary.

Hi Rohinton I heartily appreciate your interest in Ayurveda which is the science of life. * Please go through a Blood test of PSA (Prostate specific Antigen test) [of already done ,please mention the value] *HbA1c [Average bloodsugar value of past 2-3months]

As you mentioned here , your bodily constitution is mainly PAITIKA in nature ( PITA predominant) , your medication and lifestyle changes should also focuses on that( in connection with prostate gland)

So you can start,

1.Guluchyadi kwatham tab 2-0-2 before food 2.Punarnavadi kwatham tab 2-0-2 after food
3.Chandraprabha gulika 2-0-2 after food 4.Thriphaladi churnam 1tsp with hot water at bedtime

***Weekly once Virechana(Purgation) with Avipathy churnam (1packet/10gm) with ½glass hot water in empty stomach followed by light diet only - this is to cleanse your body and to balance your PITA dosa

PATHYA APATHYA [DO’S AND DON’TS]

*Do’s 3litres of water /day More focus on fruits and vegetables Include Sprouted grains Mild Walking - daily 20- 30min Practice mild yoga and meditation regularly (accordance with your strength- avoid strenous activities and yoga postures)

*Don’ts Tea /coffee Oily too salty sour sweet foods Junk foods Carbonated/soft drinks Maida and its products

*Coriander Seed Water -Soak 1 tsp coriander seeds overnight in water. Strain & drink in morning- this will helps to calm your excess PITA in stomach.

For balancing Pitta and supporting prostate health, there are specific herbs and lifestyle practices you might find helpful. Among herbs, Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) is advisable. It’s known for supporting urinary tract health and can be taken as a decoction. Simply boil 1 teaspoon in 2 cups of water until reduced to half, strain and drink this twice daily.

Incorporating Shatavari (Asparagus racemosus) is highly beneficial for balancing Pitta and nourishing body tissues. Prepare a drink by mixing 1 teaspoon of Shatavari powder in a glass of warm milk, taken once in the evening would be soothing and aid in better sleep. For cooling effects, Aloe Vera juice is great for Pitta pacifying; consume 20-30 ml twice daily.

Diet-wise, focus on cooling, hydrating foods. Include more barley, oats, and cooling vegetables like cucumber and zucchini. Avoid spicy, oily, and fried foods that aggravate Pitta. Well-cooked, mild soups and stews can be beneficial. Fresh fruits like pomegranate or sweet lime serve both Pitta and prostate care well.

For lifestyle, incorporate gentle yoga practices such as Savasana and forward bends. Meditation can help reduce stress, a common Pitta aggravator. Ensure a regular sleep schedule, trying to go to bed and wake up at the same time daily. An evening walk might usefully relax your body before sleep.

Timing matters; morning is ideal for detoxifying herbs, while evenings suit calming remedies. Also, ensure proper hydration but reduce liquid consumption right before bed to minimize nighttime urination.

As your constitution and age require careful dosages, start with half the recommended doses, observing for any adverse reactions. Always consult with an Ayurvedic practitioner before beginning new herbs, particularly when integrating them into existing routines. Enhanced caution and tailored adjustments ensure your safety and health at 80.
