how many hours fasting for blood test - #37569

Lucas

I am really confused about this whole fasting thing for my recent blood tests. I went to the doctor last week, and they said I needed to fast before doing blood tests, but didn’t really specify how many hours fasting for blood test purposes. I looked online, and I see mixed info everywhere! Some say 8 hours, others say 12 or even longer. Last time I did this, I think I fasted for about 10 hours but honestly, I was super hungry and didn't feel great at all. I kind of freaked out afterward too, I started questioning if I did it right! And now I have to go again for some tests because they’re checking cholesterol and sugar levels, so, like, how many hours fasting for blood test will I actually need this time? Is it really the same for everyone? Can I drink water? I had salad for dinner the night before and I’m always wondering if I'm making my fasting a little too strict or freaking out over the minor details. I’d love to hear from you all on your experiences or if there are tips to make it a bit easier?? I just want to get it done right but also don’t want to feel terrible afterwards!

Doctors' responses

Fasting for blood tests can indeed be a bit confusing, especially when different sources provide varying guidelines. Typically, for routine blood tests like lipid panels (which measure cholesterol) or fasting glucose tests (for blood sugar), 8 to 12 hours of fasting is recommended. The idea is to obtain an accurate reading without interference from recent food intake. The exact duration can vary, usually it’s better to stick to what your healthcare provider advises, but typically 8 to 12 hours is sufficient.

For your cholesterol and sugar tests, 8 to 12 hours fasting is generally recommended. During this period, water is allowed and actually encouraged to keep you hydrated. However, avoid tea, coffee, or any other beverages as these can interfere. Also, medications prescribed to you should be taken as advised, but if in doubt, consulting the prescribing healthcare professional would be ideal.

Having salad for dinner the night before your fasting should be fine, don’t worry too much about the previous meal as long as it’s balanced. There’s no need to overly stress about details or be too strict. This fasting process primarily aims at ensuring an empty stomach, not a dramatic shift in daily habits.

To ease your fasting discomfort, try drinking more water and perhaps scheduling your test in the early morning to minimize the hours you actually spend fasting while awake. Also, having a small, healthy snack ready post-test can help.

If you ever feel light-headed or ill during fasting, it’s important to prioritize safety first. Address urgent medical concerns promptly. Though fasting is widely applicable, it’s best to refine the specifics to align with individual needs, considering their dosha balance and constitutional type, as per Ayurveda, but only as an adjunct to conventional medical guidelines.
