can we store hot water in copper bottle - #38507

Amelia

I am really confused about something. I've been using a copper bottle for my water, and I've heard people say that using copper is great for your health—like it has these detox properties or whatever. Recently, I started boiling some water, and then I thought, "Can we store hot water in a copper bottle?" Like, is that okay? I mean, I read a few things online, and some sources say it’s fine until the water cools down, but others make it sound like it’s a total no-no! I've also noticed that my bottle sometimes has a funny taste after I put hot water in it. It makes me worry! Is that normal or does it mean something’s off? I really love the idea of keeping water in copper, but it’s like, am I doing more harm than good? Anyway, I usually heat water to about 80-90 degrees Celsius (not too boiling since I'm trying to avoid burns!) and then pour it in. Should I just use it for cool or room temp water instead? I read copper can react with heat, which makes me doubt my choices. Could someone please share their experience or knowledge on this?? 😟 Thank you!

Doctors' responses

Storing hot water in a copper bottle is not recommended, especially at temperatures like 80-90°C. You see, copper can indeed have numerous health benefits when used properly in Ayurveda, as it is believed to balance the tridoshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha) and provide anti-microbial properties. When copper leaches into water, it can offer benefits like helping with digestion and reducing inflammation.

However, the issue with hot water is its potential to cause excessive copper leaching. Higher temperatures might accelerate the release of copper ions into the water, which, in excess, can be harmful. This could lead to symptoms like nausea or stomach upset when consumed regularly. The funny taste you notice might actually be due to an increased metallic taste from more extensive copper ion release than usual. That metallic taste is a tell-tale sign something isn’t quite right and should not be ignored.

It’s best to stick with room temperature or cool water in your copper bottle. Ideally, fill the bottle with water and allow it to sit for about 8-10 hours or overnight, this enables the copper to safely infuse the water with a nominal amount of its mineral benefits. Refrain from keeping any other liquids, and avoid using copper for acidic or dairy products, as these substances can also react negatively with copper.

Copper can oxidize over time, so periodic cleaning with a mixture of lemon juice and salt, followed by a good rinse with water, will help maintain the integrity of the bottle. In cases of frequent nausea or stomach upset, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor for personalized guidence. Remember, balance is everything in Ayurveda, and overusing even a beneficial metal like copper can disrupt the harmony of your body.

It’s not the best idea to store hot water in a copper bottle; the heat can indeed cause some reactions that might not be beneficial. Copper bottles and vessels are traditionally recommended for holding room temperature water because copper does leach into water more when heated. While copper is known for its antimicrobial properties and benefits like supporting digestion and balancing the three doshas when used correctly, higher temperatures can influence its chemical behavior.

When you notice a funny taste, this can be a sign of excessive copper leaching. This isn’t likely harmful in small amounts; you should avoid making it a regular practice because over time it can lead to copper toxicity when copper intake exceeds the body’s needs or capacity to process it. Instead, for drinking purposes, store room temperature or cool water in your copper bottle and allow it to sit for six to eight hours — overnight is common — to let the copper infuse into the water gently.

For heating water, it’s better to use stainless steel or glass, which can handle higher temperatures without reacting. Also, from a dosha perspective, if you’re a pitta dominant individual, you may need to be more cautious as excessive heat and metal intake could increase pitta imbalances, leading to issues like indigestion or acidity. So yes, your inclination to use it for cooler or room temperature water is spot on! By following these guidelines, you’ll ensure you’re harnessing the benefits of copper without overexposing yourself to possible negatives.
