can i take triphala at night - #41132

James

I am really confused about something and hope someone can help. For the past few months, I've been trying to get my digestion on track. I’ve been dealing with bloating and discomfort, especially after meals, and it’s been driving me nuts. A friend recommended triphala, saying it's really good for digestion and can help with detoxifying. I've read that it’s known for lots of benefits but I'm not exactly sure about the timing. Can I take triphala at night? I’ve been thinking it might be best to take it before bed since I usually feel more bloated after dinner and thought maybe it would help flush things out overnight, you know? But then I heard some people say taking it at night might not be good for everyone. I tried it a few days ago at night, and while I felt like I slept better, I also woke up feeling a bit weird, like I had to go to the bathroom really badly. Is that normal? Like does triphala work differently depending on when you take it? I just wanna make sure im doing the right thing cause I’m kinda at my wits end with all this! Thank you guys!

Doctors' responses

You can indeed take Triphala at night, and it’s actually quite common for it to be consumed before bed to aid in digestion and detoxification. Triphala is a traditional Ayurvedic formulation made from three fruits - Amalaki, Bibhitaki, and Haritaki – and it’s known to support healthy digestion, balance the doshas, and cleanse the colon. Taking it at night can help gently stimulate the bowels overnight, so it’s not unusual to feel the urge to use the bathroom upon waking.

The concerns about taking Triphala at night often relate to individual constitution and how one’s body might react. If your body feels somewhat uncomfortable or overly stimulated, it may indicate an imbalance or that the dosage needs adjusting. Typically, about half to one teaspoon mixed with warm water is recommended before bed. However, for some individuals, such as those with a Vata dominance or sensitive digestive systems, if taken routinely, Triphala might initially cause some discomfort like cramping or a rush to the bathroom, especially if a higher dosage is used.

If you continue to feel uneasy, consider fine-tuning the dosage by starting with a smaller amount - say a quarter teaspoon - and observe how your body responds. It’s important to listen to your body and adjust accordingly. To enhance its effects, take it with a dash of warm honey or ghee, as these carriers can aid in better absorption and reduce possible uncertainty.

For your bloating issue specifically, ensure you’re implementing holistic dietary and lifestyle measures alongside Triphala. This includes eating at regular intervals, making lunch your heaviest meal rather than dinner, and promoting a diet with easily digestible foods like soups and stews which can alleviate bloating. Avoid excess raw foods and cold beverages close to bedtime as these can exacerbate bloating.

Triphala can be an effective remedy, but addressing the root causes holistically contributes to longer term relief. If symptoms persist, it might be worth consulting with an Ayurvedic practitioner or a qualified healthcare provider who can offer you personalized guidance, especially taking into account your unique prakriti (constitution) and current health state.
