what are the disadvantages of masterbation - #38514

Dylan

I am trying to wrap my head around this feeling I've been having lately. I’ve been reading some things online, and now I'm worried about what are the disadvantages of masterbation. It started a few months ago when I noticed I was turning to masterbation more often, like way more than I used to. At first, I thought it was no big deal, just a normal thing, you know? But then I started feeling a little guilty about it. Sometimes I experience this kinda weird fatigue afterwards—like my energy just drains. I've also noticed that I’m more irritable and distracted after. It’s like right when I think it's just a stress relief, I get hit with these doubts. What are the disadvantages of masterbation that I might not be considering? I've read some people say it could affect my mental health or even my relationships if it gets outta control, but I'm not sure what that really means. Do you think there’s a fine line between it being healthy and, well, unhealthy? Or am I just overthinking it? Just trying to figure out if there’s stuff I should be worried about or if it’s all in my head. Any advice or insight on what are the disadvantages of masterbation would really help!

Doctors' responses

The concern around masturbation, especially frequent masturbation, can stem from various perspectives, including personal, cultural, or even spiritual beliefs. It’s not uncommon to feel fatigue or irritability post-masturbation, as you’re using your body’s energy in a specific way. In Ayurveda, we discuss the concept of Ojas—vital energy, which is thought to be somewhat depleted during sexual activities, including masturbation. When done in moderation, it might not lead to any significant issues, but excessiveness can lead to an imbalance.

Overindulgence in masturbation can potentially harm your Prana, the life force energy, leading to fatigue and irritability, as it taxes the nervous system. It may also disrupt the balance of Vata dosha, responsible for mental agility and stability, creating mental restlessness and distraction. On a psychological level, frequent masturbation might foster dependency as a stress-reliever, potentially affecting your ability to process emotions differently. This can lead to repressed issues resurfacing as irritability or anxiety.

Regarding relationships, excessive masturbation might affect your libido, emotional intimacy, and readiness to connect with others, impacting overall relationship satisfaction. To strike a balance, practice mindfulness during such activities, ensuring it’s driven by genuine need for pleasure rather than habit. Incorporate grounding practices like yoga, meditation, or Pranayama breathing exercises to restore your energy and mental balance.

If you’re looking to manage your energy levels, consider consuming foods that nourish your Ojas like almonds, ghee, milk, and honey. Ensure that your routine includes suitable sleep, balanced diet, and regular physical activity—this trio supports your overall health, moodiness and energy levels. You’re not overthinking, but exploring your feelings critically—recognize what balance looks like for you and address any underlying concerns openly, perhaps through discussion or counseling.
