is there any side effects of masturbation - #38536

Riley

I am kinda worried and just need some advice... like, recently I noticed some changes in my body and I'm just curious. I've been, you know, indulging in masturbation more than usual, maybe daily and I thought it was normal but now I'm not so sure. I’ve heard people say, like, is there any side effects of masturbation? And I can’t help but wonder if I’m doing something wrong. Sometimes, I feel this guilt or weird tension after, as if I shouldn't be doing it, but then again, I read different opinions online. My energy levels have also kinda dropped and I’ve felt more anxious lately. I don’t know if this is all connected or if it's just me overthinking? Friends joke about it, but honestly, I’m a bit nervous. Like, is there any side effects of masturbation that I should be aware of? I mean, I really want to enjoy my life but not at the cost of my health, you know? If there are any risks I should know about or anything, I’d appreciate your thoughts. Thanks a ton for any help!

Doctors' responses

Masturbation, when practiced within moderation, is generally considered a natural and safe form of sexual expression. From an Ayurvedic perspective, balance and moderation are key. However, when it becomes excessively frequent, it can lead to imbalances in doshas, particularly vata and pitta. In Ayurveda, excessive masturbation is thought to impact the shukra dhatu, which relates to reproductive tissue, thus potentially leading to decreased vitality and increased exhaustion.

Feeling guilt or tension afterwards might be related to societal perceptions rather than the act itself being inherently harmful. It’s important to cultivate a healthy and realistic view on sexuality which does not involve guilt or shame. You mentioned anxiety and reduced energy, which might be attributed to several factors, not solely masturbation. Ensure your lifestyle supports your overall health; balanced diet, regular sleep, and stress management are crucial.

A simple way to rebalance is by engaging in regular physical activity and adopting a diet that supports your dosha. Incorporating warming spices like ginger or cumin for vata imbalance, and cooling foods such as cucumber and cilantro for pitta can be helpful. Meditative practices such as yoga and pranayama also play a crucial role in stabilizing mental state and enhancing overall vitality.

If you’re feeling persistent low energy and anxiety, consider reducing the frequency of masturbation to see if symptoms improve. Always keep in mind, individual constitutions vary, and some may be more prone to being affected by overindulgence in sexual activities than others. If discomfort continues, it may be helpful to consult a healthcare professional or an Ayurvedic practitioner to address any underlying concerns or health issues. Remember, creating harmony in all aspects of life often requires small, sustainable adjustments that honor the body’s innate wisdom.

Masturbation, in moderation, is a natural activity for many and generally considered safe from a medical perspective. However, when it becomes excessive, it might bring about some imbalances, especially from a Siddha-Ayurvedic standpoint. According to the principles of Ayurveda, overindulgence can lead to disturbances in your doshas, particularly vata and pitta. These imbalances might manifest as mental fog, anxiety, and fatigue, which ties to the energy levels you’ve noticed.

The anxiety you mentioned could be linked to this vata imbalance, which governs the nervous system and mind. Excessive masturbation might also affect your ojas, considered the essence of vigor and overall immune strength, potentially reducing vitality when overexerted. It’s also worth noting that guilt or tension may diminish overall mental health if left unaddressed.

To support vata and restore balance, consider grounding practices. Daily routines that include regular meals, especially those that are warm and nourishing, like stews with spices like cumin and turmeric, help pacify vata. Include relaxation techniques, such as pranayama (breathing exercises) that calm the mind. Gentle yoga before sleep can aid in calming nervous energy too.

If you find yourself continuing to struggle with these feelings of anxiety or fatigue, it could be worthwhile seeking personal guidance from an Ayurvedic practitioner who can give you a regimen tailored to your constitution. Always ensure that your habits align with your personal health goals.
