Doctors' responses

Post-surgery challenges like you’re facing are indeed complex, particularly when it comes to parathyroid function and calcium regulation. Maintaining optimal parathyroid health through Ayurveda involves both dietary adjustments and lifestyle modifications. To support your recovery, consider the following Ayurvedic guidelines carefully tailored to enhance parathyroid function and maintain calcium levels more naturally.

Firstly, dietary changes are crucial. Focus on calcium-rich foods that are easily absorbed, such as sesame seeds, amaranth, ragi (finger millet), and leafy green vegetables like kale or collard greens. These can be incorporated into your meals daily to help support your calcium levels. Use warm, cooked meals rather than raw, as they are easier to digest and assimilate, enhancing your agni (digestive fire).

Herbal support can also be beneficial. Ashwagandha and Shankhapushpi are known for their rejuvenating properties and may indirectly support parathyroid health by reducing stress, a factor known to affect hormonal balance. Taking these in powdered form with warm water or milk might support overall balance.

Engage in moderate exercise, such as walking or yoga, particularly asana like tadasana and trikonasana, which promote circulation and energy flow. Ensuring you are getting sunlight exposure daily is essential for natural vitamin D synthesis, aiding calcium absorption. Aim for 15-20 mins of sunlight several times a week.

For long-term solutions, improving digestive system’s function is essential. Consider including ginger in your daily routine, perhaps in the form of ginger tea with honey, to aid digestion and assimilation.

However, given the critical nature of calcium homeostasis, there may be situations where conventional medical treatments must be prioritized to ensure your immediate health and safety. Regular monitoring of blood calcium levels remains essential, and any severe symptoms or persistent concerns should not delay seeking medical advice. Integrating these Ayurvedic approaches can be supportive, but must be done in conjunction with the supervision of your healthcare provider to ensure safety.

Having parathyroid function affected after thyroid surgery is a complex situation, particularly with persistent low calcium levels. In Siddha-Ayurveda, maintaining calcium balance and supporting parathyroid function involve addressing the underlying dosha imbalances and enhancing the body’s natural healing abilities. Here are some practical steps that might help:

Begin by focusing on diet—incorporate more calcium-rich foods like sesame seeds, moringa leaves, almonds, and figs. These naturally enhance calcium levels. However, ensure they are right for your dosha type; for instance, if you have a pitta imbalance, almonds should be avoided.

A personalized herbal formula may be beneficial. A practitioner might suggest herbs traditionally used to support these functions, such as Ashwagandha for strengthening the body, and Shatavari, known for its potential to nurture the glands.

Pranayama, particularly Nadi Shodhana (alternate nostril breathing), can help balance the nadis and promote energy flow conducive to glandular health. Practicing it for about 5 to 10 minutes daily may enhance your body’s healing response.

It’s crucial to maintain strong agni, or digestive fire, to ensure there’s proper absorption of calcium and other nutrients. Eating warm, cooked, and easily digestible foods is often recommended. Avoid cold and heavy foods that might dampen your metabolic fire.

Since your condition involves potential complications, regular consultations with your healthcare provider are essential to monitor calcium levels and ensure no interactions with any conventional treatments you may be following.
